If you like Kate Atkinson's more serious books, I think that you would like Patrick Gale - Notes on an Exhibition and A Perfectly Good Man.

I would second Patrick Gale (Notes on an Exhibition), Curtis Sittenfeld (American Wife) and Barbara Kingsolver (Poisonwood Bible).

I've just read Lucy Atkins and Lucy Foley. Enjoyed them. Also where the crawdads sing by delia Owens

You could also try Sue Gee, particularly Earth and Heaven and The Mystery of Glass. She's a writer who deserves to be more widely known.

Lots of good suggestions in here. I'd also suggest Elinor Lipman (an underrated American author who writes light, slightly comic, literary fiction). Also Alison Lurie and Carol Shields - Shields died a few years ago and seems to have been forgotten, but she's brilliant.

I like the same authors so this has given me ideas.
