Please say someone knows this book!

I've thought about this book a few times over the last few years but can't remember what it was. I remember staying at my Aunt's house who was an avid reader and she said I could choose one of her books to read. I was quite young and definitely too young to read this book but she didn't check what I'd picked, but this is the reason I can't remember too many details.

It's set in the past, I want to say wartime era or maybe before/just after. I think it was set around Dagenham docks and was all from the perspective of a young girl. I want to say her name or another main characters name was rose/ruby something colour related. Her family are poor and she ends up working in a brothel I think she was preteen/early teen at this point.

This is all I have not much to go on but it's really getting on my nerves as it keeps popping up in my mind. Any suggestions?

I've been beaten to it - sounds like Ruby in the Smoke.

There's a whole series of them - Tiger in the Well and a few others.

They're aimed at young teenagers I think (they feel edgy given the opium den and brothel appearances but I don't think there's much description!)

Haha thought it was that one. I borrowed it from my grandmas bookshelf when I was a bit too young aswell !
