It had a brown cover and was possibly a Reader's Digest book. The only story I remember (because it terrified me!) was about someone climbing up the stairs while saying 'Sally, I'm on the first step, Sally I'm on the second step' etc.
I would love to find it and have run out of ideas to google- any ideas please? Thanks

I’m afraid I can’t help, but wanted to say thank you as I’ve been looking for a similar 70s/80s children’s ghost story anthology and couldn’t remember the name, but thanks to the suggestion above I went down a Google rabbit hole and found my book! The Young Oxford Book of Ghost Stories, with a creepy one about rival ghosts which was the one I remembered from years ago. Hope you find your book as well OP Smile

Oh lovely to hear you've tracked your book down and thank you so much for the link. Even if I don't find mine, I can kill some time wallowing in nostalgia 😀

You're welcome - I found another one from years ago that I recognised straight away from the cover art. They are my lockdown treats for myself Grin

This is ‘Folk Tales of The British Isles’

The story is ‘The Old Man in the White House’

As soon as I read your post, I knew what you meant. It was my favourite book as a child and that Old Man story is freakin’ terrifying!!!
