Fantasy sci/fi series for dh

He had read a lot of fantasy and some sci fi but hasn't picked up a series for ages and I thought i'd get him a first book in a newish series for Christmas

He likes proper goblins and elves type stuff, all prachett, no gaiman (peasant), Asimov, Ian m banks. No game of thrones, no urban fantasy

Any ideas? Something new this year would be great as I know he won't have read it.

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. The Dragonlance novels. Start with Dragons of Autumn Twilight.

And I second Fionavar! And everything else by Guy Gavriel Kaye too Grin
The Spellsinger series is good too.
And Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar Saga. Start with Magician.
And the Windsingers. It's by Megan Lindholm (who is Robin Hobb) and George RR Martin.
And if he likes "punny, funny" stuff, Robert Asprin's Myth Inc series is good.

I never ever see anyone else recommending Guy Gavriel Kay! The Fionavar trilogy is one of the series that I reread every few years.

LE Modesett jnr - especially the Recluse books - no elves etc. but very interesting magic.
Barbed Coil is JV Jones - also good
