I love a good creepy book and do like a spooky house with weird goings on.
Any ideas?

We Have Always Lived In The Castle by Shirley Jackson. Very chilling.

PaxtonsCrown · 06/09/2019 12:04

Agree with We Have Always Lived in the Castle. You could also try...
Wakenhyrst Michelle Paver
A House of Ghosts W.C. Ryan
The Silent Companions Laura Purcell

Ooh they sound good PaxtonsCrown! Thanks

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver was one of the most grippingly chilling books I’ve ever read I think. That isolation, dark and terror was so well described.

slipperyeel · 06/09/2019 14:26

Agree, Dark Matter is brilliant, very very creepy

Slate House by David Mitchell is fantastic

slipperyeel · 06/09/2019 14:28

The Haunting of Hill House, also by Shirley Jackson, of course!

Dark Matter is amazing - not spooky house but a book that is genuinely unsettling and scary!

Agree with Slade House too - different. Very good.

Ruth Ware's new one is good - The Turn of the Key. Not the kind of spooky house you expect but spooky all the same!
Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand also features an old country house.

I will have to check some of these out!

Ooh Paxtons I was just coming on here to recommend Wakenhyrst! I haven’t read any other Michelle Paver but Dark Matter is on my list.

Mist in the mirror and the small hand by susan hill are excellent. Also one by her about a venetian painting, can't remember the exact name ( could have even been the mist in the mirror one I listened to them all as audiobooks as I walked the dog and they were gripping and it definitely reduced the monotony

MegBusset · 08/09/2019 18:28
