Help me remember this children's book...

There was a book or series of books I used to read when I was younger, probably late 90's. I think they had a fantasy theme. All the way through the book there were little riddles and puzzles to solve before you had to carry on reading. For example it might have got to a page about a door and a lock, and then you had to complete the riddle to find the number that opened the lock? I remember them being quite intricate and I loved them but it's such a loose memory for me I can't place a name to it. Does it ring a bell for anyone?

There are a whole range of 'choose your own adventure' books, maybe start there?

stuckfornamesargh · 19/08/2019 10:51

It wasn't the type where you choose your own ending, just the riddles and puzzles along the way

The Knickerbocker Gang?

I remember the Warlock of Firetop Mountain had a lot of things with locks and key but I think it was popular quite a bit earlier, say mid 80s?

Yes I remember them! They cane in a plastic wallet with a dice, and a wheel and things to help you solve the quizzes! No help, but I loved them too!

Fettuccinecarbonara · 29/08/2019 07:12

My first one was called ghostly towers :)

Ringing a vague bell for me too. Sorry, unhelpful....

Sounds like the Steve Jackson fighting fantasy series.

Have a look under the name Marvin Miller. He did a few books like this, one called something like You Be the Detective and I found one I had called You Be The Jury to give to my son the other day. He had one called The Mad Scientist as well where you had to solve puzzles? See if any of those ring a bell. They were definitely different to the Choose Your Own Adventure and Fighting Fantasy Series.

Ooh I had the Haunted Tower!

ScreamingValenta · 01/09/2019 17:10

My first thought was the Fighting Fantasy series - Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone devised them. The aforementioned Warlock; Citadel of Chaos; Appointment with FEAR ... I used to love them.

Was it a book like this one? I remember having this in the 1980s when I was younger, it came in a plastic wallet with maps and other bits and pieces. It's a famous five one but there may have been others in the series.

littlecabbage · 01/09/2019 18:12

NannyR Yes! Those are the ones I remember.

Usborne puzzle adventures - I LOVED those!
