Help identifying a book - journalist trapped in well

Trying to track down a book for my mother based on her somewhat vague description... Apparently it starts with a journalist searching for something in a well, he finds it but is then locked inside the well (possibly by someone screwing the lid on) and is trapped. Have tried googling, but it is not my friend tonight. Does this ring any bells for any of you lovely ladies?!

There is a well in The Wind Up Bird Chronicles by Haruki Murakami but can't remember enough of the plot.
