Wasn't sure where to put this in tv or here!
I came very late to game of thrones and binge watched the lot
I have just read the first book and can't decide whether to keep going with the others
Any opinions?

Following with interest - I'm halfway through the first book and haven't watched any of the TV ones. Can't say I'm finding it riveting, maybe a slow burner?

Floralmoral · 31/05/2019 19:35

It is a bit of a slow burner but I loved it when I properly got into it. There’s so much more detail in the books, they’re amazing.

badlyneedapedicure · 31/05/2019 21:50

Hmmmm I must say I'm not a re reader of anything but I kind of feel that's what I'm doing.
I think so far it's almost exactly the same as the T V show and I'm surprised at the writing I expected more?..
I think I'll take a break and perhaps go back

If you keep going with the books there will be a point where you a torn between killing Martin for not getting on and writing the next one and letting him live so he will finish them.

1987 the beggar started Wild Cards and the appearance of each volume is sporadic.

lotusbell · 08/06/2019 22:16

I've been building myself up to reading the books - for a few years now! I know I'm going to struggle but I feel like I need to read them. Have only got the first book but I always pick something else off the shelf Hmm

badlyneedapedicure · 09/06/2019 09:06

Dive in it was a very easy read

The first 3 books are excellent. I hated Book 4 'A Feast for Crows' (I'm not a fan of the Iron Islands). Book 5 was better, but still a bit flabby.

XingMing · 09/06/2019 18:31

DS read the first three, and stopped. he didn't enjoy book 4.but was ahead of the TV series, so he has been sniffy ever since.

MoaMartinson · 11/06/2019 23:52

I enjoyed the first book but, like pp, as the series continued disliked them more and more: also found myself skipping the sections featuring my least favourite characters. By book four also gave up.

JAPAB · 13/06/2019 04:24

I didn't like the first half of books 2 & 3 but did like their second halves.

Actually liked book 4. It got to the point were I wanted to skip chapters so I could find out what happened next with the character I had just left.

Book 5 is the only one I really thought was a bit flat.

I think a comment I read summed it up. It is comparable in length to LOTR, but by the time you finish it it feels like not much has happened. Whereas by the end of Rings it feels like you are on the other side of an epic journey where lots of things happened.

JAPAB · 13/06/2019 04:28

Speaking of epic journeys, I've a feeling that we are nowhere near Winds. Then who knows how long until book7.

It is amusing to think that the entire eight year show has been completed in a timeframe shorter than the gap since the last book.

Alicewond · 13/06/2019 05:04

Books are amazing and far more in depth than the tv show. However the author has already announced if he dies before they are finished he gives no permission for anyone to do so. Given the time between books I can’t see they’ll ever be finished, which is a shame

speadyourwingsandflyaway · 16/06/2019 11:40

I'm 2/3 through the first book and really like it - it's easy to read, I think. They are of course all very long!

TonTonMacoute · 16/06/2019 12:33

I didn't like the first book at all. I thought that if I read another detailed description of food or clothes I would scream.

I did keep going and really enjoyed the next few, but then they seemed to run out of steam again. I've now got one left and haven't yet felt any particular urge to read it.

beguilingeyes · 26/11/2019 15:49

I really liked the books, but I've got the hump now as I don't think he's ever going to finish them.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 26/11/2019 15:53

He’s sworn to have WOW finished by next summer - and the chapters released already would be a decent length book so it must be possible. Dream Of Spring OTOH seems pretty unlikely ever to be released.

I’m rereading with the History of Westeros podcast atm and am enjoying it but am going to have to skip the Reek chapters.

ithinkmycatistryingtokillme · 26/11/2019 15:54

I want to read them but I am not going to til the series is finished(thinking of the wheel of time books by Robert Jordan, he did leave notes and someone was comissioned to finish the series but the last books were disappointing)
