Stuck in hospital - books to cheer me up..

Stuck in hospital for at least a week after emergency surgery. Any recommendations on books to cheer me up? I've like recently Eleanor Oliphant, Major Pettigrews last stand, Eureka Street, Catch 22, Jeeves and Love in a Cold Climate, so i guess i have fairly broad tastes.

I'm reading Eleanor Oliphant now and it's brilliant!

Do you have a kindle? I'm reading (and really enjoying) Ruth Hogan's The Keeper of Lost Things. I read A Man Called Ove last month and enjoyed that too. Both have shorter chapters, which might be easier for you in hospital with the noisy distractions etc. Hope you have a quick recovery

Thanks codename and duchess. I think i read the keeper of lost things but did enjoy it. Forgot my actual kindle but do have the app on my phone. Yes short chapters might be best. Have someone checking my bp every five mins it seems.

You might like Alexander McCall Smith Scotland Street series (starts with 44 Scotland Street).
Gentle, funny, relatable character. Short chapters as it was originally serialised in a newspaper.

I do like alexander mcall smith smokeandbone and the Isabel Dalhousie ones too. For some reason i can't get along with the no 1 ladies detective agency though or that would keep me busy. I'll check and see if more out but i think i've read them all.

Update there are now 12 Scotland street books..i think.i have only read five .

Gervaise Phinn (but not "All the Lonely People" cos it's sad!) his autobiographical ones are hilarious.
Gerald Durrell's "My Family and Other Animals" and the two sequels are funny too - gentle humour.
Pip Granger's books are good - "Not All Tarts Are Apple" is the first one - her turn of phrase is just perfect, and they have "real" likeable characters and are engrossing.

On a hospital theme you could read This is going to hurt: the secret diaries of a junior doctor
It's such a funny memoir and you can easily dip in and out

I’ve been enjoying Alan Bradley’s Flavia de Luce crime novels. Sort of English country house cosy crime, if one inhabitant of the house was an underage evil genius. They’re funny and quirky.

pombear love gerald durrell. I'll look into the other two you mention - sound good. Dance they also sound great, will look them up. modest i loved this is going to hurt - not sure i'd recommend reading in hospital though . I'm going to have to stay in here a while to get through all those.

Have you read Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books? There are loads of them, they are very, very easy to read, you don't need to concentrate hard, and they are laugh out loud funny, especially the earlier ones. They begin with One For the Money.

I haven't read those onlylivingboy (carter fan?). Thanks i'll look them up. I did escape from hospital but meant to be taking it easy so should still have time to catch up on reading .
