I'd like to read some books/watch some films set in places that we are visiting on holiday this year.

So far, I have -
Cannery Row - John Steinbeck
Brooklyn - Colm Tóibín
The Rock - film
Jaws - Peter Benchley (book) and film too

Anyone have any good suggestions, I know there must be loads.

Ragtime by EL Doctorow is a good NYC book. I didn't find much fiction set on the Cape when I went, but I did enjoy Cape Cod by Henry David Thoreau.

Thanks both. I love the look of Ragtime. I'll definitely be getting that.

The Tripfiction website looks brilliant. I'm sure I'll be able to find some more books from those lists.

Thank you so much Smile

When I went to Cape Cod I read The Outermost House, by Henry Beston, and loved it. It's just a non fiction account of him living in his little house on the very edge of the cape, with descriptions of the weather and the sea and the birds. Nothing happens, it's just lovely and very atmospheric.

The book of Big Little Lies is set in Sydney but when they turned it into a TV show it was set in Monterey and it’s stunning to watch.

We were on Cape Cod last summer. I read The Giants House by Elizabeth McCrscken and found a book called The Big House by George Colt which seemed to be sold everywhere there. It’s about a family holiday house. If you’re near Brewster the Brewster Ladies Library has an amazing second hand book sale you can but books by the bag. They had a local section. The film The Way Way Back is really good and set on the Cape.

Re NYC I loved Lillian Boxfish Tales a Walk, My Name is Lucy Barton and Akin. I bought Brooklyn by Colm Toibin and Behold the Dreamers but haven’t read them yet. I bought The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street set in the Lower East Side whilst at The Tenement Museum.

Think some of Goldfinch is set in NYC but it’s loong.

Time After Time by Lisa Grunwald is set in Grand Central Station and In the Midst of Winter by Isabel Allende is set in Brooklyn. Can’t vouch for either as both in my tbr pile.

A tree grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith is one of my favourite books
