Val McDermid recommendations for a book group?

We never read crime fiction in my book group so I'd like to choose one, even though I don't read much crime fiction... or maybe because I don't? Anyway, I've heard Val McDermid on the radio a lot and been really impressed by how she comes across, so wondered if anyone can suggest one of hers for a fairly disparate book group. Thanks very much!

A Place of Execution is one of the best crime novels I’ve ever read - so well written and brilliantly plotted. I’d steer clear of the Wire in the Blood series unless everyone in the group is ok with graphic, disturbing violence.

Seconding the recommendation for A Place of Execution. It’s very very good, and much less graphic than the Wire in the Blood series.

Sounds good - two votes is good for me! Yes, i think too much graphic violence probably best avoided.
Thanks very much both.
