"Things we have in common" - can someone please explain the ending to me?

I bought this on the back of a thread on here. Just finished it and all I can think is wtaf?!
Can somebody please explain the ending to me or at least give me their interpretation?
I enjoyed it but it has left me totally

It's a while since I read it, but I interpreted the last scene as opening the possibility that he will go on to do the same thing to someone else.

With Y possibly condoning / facilitating, or at the very least, turning a blind eye.

That's what I thought too, finished it yesterday. But happy to discuss as I felt confused !
