I got something out of it, if that means "worth it". I might reread given a chance. Be prepared; it's hard to follow.

I read it years ago and really liked it. It was one of my favourite books for a long time. Can't remember much of it now and might re-read it. Go for it!

bbensley · 24/03/2004 07:25

I read it a while back and enjoyed it. I have books like that on my shelf, you buy them then think I'll read it after the next one and never get round to it.

It's a beautiful book - I really liked it. Beware, it is a bit heavy going, but I would say definitely worth it.

Tragic and heart-wrenching - but marvellous. Go for it!

DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE FILM
It is impossible to do Toni Morrison's narrative magic justict on film.
The book is wonderful, but there are harrowing descriptions of brutality and torment to a mother and to kids and a childbirth scene, so if you are feeling PG weepy and a bit sensitive, beware (I'm right in thinking you are PG aren't I Tiwg?)
It is a fantastic book but very powerful

bossykate · 07/04/2004 12:37

it is a work of genius - but very harrowing.

It is excellent but I really don't think I could read it now...after two kids. Extremely harrowing and distressing.

bossykate · 07/04/2004 12:56

I enjoyed Beloved but found it very hard to follow. For anyone else who was confused by it this link is to an essay that tries to explain it. There is short synopsis as well as a chapter by chapter, good for reading along side the book

Ooops! tried to insert a link but it didn't work, here's the web address:
