I know I've been hogging the boards the last few days, but I don't care :P Just been curious on other peoples opinions on things.

I didn't know where to put this, so I apologise if it's in the wrong category.

I was wondering what everyones favourite Urban Legend/Cautionary Tale was. I have been fascinated in them for pretty much forever, due to so many meanings and of course expressing the nations fears.

So what are your favourites? Feel free to share the UL with us! :)

Ok, so I googled St Ebba's Epileptic Colony and now I'm even more uneasy.

BlackOutTheSun · 14/08/2012 13:52

Its sounds like a crappy, badly written horror movie

Of to google St Ebba's Epileptic Colony now

That RSE is horrible! At the risk of sounding like a complete dunce, it's fictional isn't it?

SausageSmuggler · 14/08/2012 14:05

Ah, X-post.

LordOfThe5Rings · 14/08/2012 14:19

What's 9mmm about?

I looked up Mum and Dad eck that is vile. So is A Serbian Film... Well the description is, nothing else is going to be viewed by me, thank you very much.

I looked up Smegs but only came up with smegma, which is disturbing, but for a while different reason.

Why would anyone want to watch necrophlia/child abuse stuff? Maybe play rape for some, or a little bit of gorn for others, but that above stuff is beyond vile.

I had a friend who sent me a link to an 'erotic' story - I thought 'not my usual thing, but hey ho, it may be a funny one or particularly well written, so I'll give it ago' it was alright written but it wasn't until the end it stated the girl 12 and the guy 14. I could've killed my friend and incidently, we are no longer friends because that's definately not funny. What if I would have been caught by the police? I'm not pervert!

Hellingly, what an unfortunate but appropriate name. That's bloody freaky. I know it sounds weird but I get a vibe off certain pictures and not others. I have seen a few I just KNOW something real bad happened in. I don't know why though. Eeergh.

Moominsarescary · 14/08/2012 14:46

Now that RSE would be freaky if they left all that stuff out about them taking their own organs out and having them put back in again

SausageSmuggler · 14/08/2012 15:13

Re: 9mm, if it's the film I'm thinking of its Nicholas Cage as a guy investigating the disappearance of a girl in her late teens/early 20's and its all linked to snuff films etc.

Recommendation for a seriously scary movie - The Changeling, 1980, George C Scott.

The best bit is when they do a seance and when they play the tapes back there's a child's voice whispering....gaaaaaaaaah....

changing the subject, has anybody heard any good royal family urban legends?

the ones I've heard are:

  • the queen has 4 children by 3 different fathers; charles and anne by philip, then andrew by lord porchester and edward by lord plunkett. andrew is obv the odd one out as he is fat with a round face whereas the other royals are all thin with horse faces.
  • andrew is gay and fergie divorced him because she caught him in bed with tony slattery, who has been unable to get work since.
  • edward's father is the only non-royal buried in the royal family plot.
  • philip was unfaithful to the queen about 10 years into the marriage, with her cousin princess alexandra. as a result the queen and alexandra have barely spoken since.
  • philip had affairs with katie boyle and lots of others and has a child with a fnch actress.
  • prince charles is tom parker bowles' dad.
  • zara and peter phillips' dad is not mark phillips.
  • harry's dad is james hewitt. when she died diana still had a ring that belonged to hewitt, she kept this so harry could have something that had belonged to his dad.
  • diana used to go for burns around london in her audi at 4 in the morning.
  • tara palmer tomkinson relieved Wills of his virginity when he was 16 and she was 27, so there'd be no risk of his losing it to anyone who'd kiss and tell later.
  • the other name in this frame for this is tiggy legge burke, but as she was their nanny and 6 years older than tp-t this seems even less likely.

while all these are myths, the funny thing is that much more salacious / loony stuff was rumoured in the press and it all turned out to be true...!

anyone know any more?

Moominsarescary · 14/08/2012 16:42

I thought the documentary, the queens cousins was quite sad. Locked away in an institution because they have LD

Arnt there more stories about royal members locked away due to LD and MH problems.

Also the theory that jack the ripper was the royals doctor, covering up an affair the prince had with a prostitute who had given birth to his first child

blueemerald · 14/08/2012 19:03

I would have thought the Rosenhan Experiments were urban lengends if I had heard it in the days before the internet! Someone should make a movie of it though!

The summary is that a psychologist instructed 8 people to fake auditory hallucinations (no other symptoms) to gain admittance to mental institutions. All were admitted and diagnosed. As soon as they were diagnosed they resumed 'normal' behavior (many of these normal behaviors were pathologised) and told their doctors they no longer had any hallucinations. The doctors refused to believe them and the length of stay varied from 7-52 days. Part of the experiment was they had to 'get themselves out' unless the situation became dramatic and a lawyer would step in. Most were released with a diagnosis 'in remission' and some with anti psychotic medication.

Another hospital was very offended by the experiment and made a deal with Rosenhan that he would send pseduo-patients to their hospital over the next three months and they would rate each admission on the likelihood of being fake. of 193 patients they rated 41 as fake and 42 as suspect. Rosenhan didn't send anyone.

LordOfThe5Rings · 14/08/2012 20:07

Elizabeth-- Most popular being that the royal family killed off Princess Diana. Who knows if it's true or not, we'll never know but I sure hope not, doesn't make the Queen look like an innocent old lady. Many said it was Charles that ordered the accident, which was apparently not an accident.

I remember hearing about that experiment.

There have been Urban Legends about students going in to pretend they had hallucinations and not being allowed out and given high doses of anti psychotic medication and never being allowed out or not being allowed out for 5 years, then put into a 'care' type home. I am glad they aren't true. Or at very least, aren't known to be true.

Started reading these a few days ago - the day before DH and my elder DC were to go away for a night. Strangely that night I was fine. Then last night, with a house full of people, I started freaking out about Stickman and jumping out of my skin at every noise! Grin
Some one asked about Royal Family stories. Has anyone heard about the Glamis Castle (childhood home of the Queen Mother) locked/missing room?
There seems to be a few theories about what it might contain.... Apparently the truth is known only to each Earl.

Moominsarescary · 14/08/2012 20:22

blue that is a well known experiment, I trained as a mh nurse and they still teach us about it now. Bloody scary though, being stuck in there.

LordOfThe5Rings · 14/08/2012 21:09

Creepy nonetheless...

I'm sorry to go back a little, but Lordofthe5Rings I am seriously Grin that you googled ME!!!

Bertie was laughing at the links I posted. Some random weirdo took odd photos of himself (semi-naked) prancing around Opko Land, the abandoned theme park.

My name is a tenuous reference to Red Dwarf, btw. Nothing to do with smegma according to the creators of the show Hmm

BonzoDooDah · 14/08/2012 23:27

I was reading this thread the other night and getting all creeped out.
Then I was up late on Saturday night wrapping pass-the-parcel things for a kids party the next day. It was about midnight and everyone else in the house was asleep. I was sitting on the floor in the back room wrapping away, house silent.

Suddenly something quite distinctly knocked on the patio doors!!!

JesusHTapdancingChristINearlyCrappedMyself!

I looked at the window into the darkness (we back onto a railway track and everything is pitch black) and there were two BIG green eyes staring at me through the glass.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!

Honestly my heart was beating so fast I went faint (Overactive imagination from this sodding thread thank you all)
The thing knocked again ...

I blinked a bit to clear the panic clouded vision and there was a bloody great big cat. Knocking on the window to get in. bastard

See here feckingcat Honest! (Calmed down now)

LordOfThe5Rings · 15/08/2012 00:41

I thought I recognised it from somewhere. :)

:o bet the poor cat was scared!

OP posts:
Moominsarescary · 15/08/2012 01:41

Bloody hell that cat looks massive! I'm hot but daren't open the patio doors in the bedroom as I'm scared of those stick men things

Elsqueak · 15/08/2012 08:06

The Stickmen cometh! What are they doing striding around at night, all menacing? Actually, forget it it...I don't want to know! Someone's bound to have a story!

Hellingsly looks so much like Silent Hill!

That cat is huge!

Does anyone remember an American game-show where students could pay off their student debt if they completed tasks at old abandoned asylums that were purported to be haunted? They had head mounted camera's so you could see their progress...really haunted or not it was bloody scary!

Tangointhenight · 15/08/2012 08:13

I wont look out the window now when I'm shutting the blinds at night for fear of catching glimpse of a slender man

Elsqueak · 15/08/2012 08:53

No, don't look out the window!

The MTV show was called 'Fear' and they didn't get any money for it..it was just for kicks! Madness!

I remember after we watched Halloween H20 DP got called out to work and I went to shut the windows which meant putting my hand through the blinds. A hand grabbed mine - it as DP. He had been checking the boot of the car when my hand appeared and he said it was too good to miss. I nearly shat myself.
