Petite support thread... continued

All petites are welcome on this thread, but it seemed like it would be particularly helpful to have a corner of Mumsnet for those of us who are petite/small framed and officially a 'healthy weight' but know we feel/look better a few pounds lighter (which would still be within a healthy weight/not underweight).

Maybe we can share goals, progress, struggles, things that are working, etc.? It would also be lovely to hear from any petites who are at a 'happy weight' and what you are doing to be successful.

Feel free to share as much or little as you like. Height, current weight, goal weight or other body measurements, nutrition, calories, exercise, NSV, etc.

Sorry to hear that @CortieTat I hope she feels better soon. Lots of nasty things going around at the moment.

I just put into my fitness pal my planned food for the day. It came out at 1880 about 500 calories above target.

I can bring that down by cutting out two treats. But I dont really want to!

Breakfast: Overnight oats with chia, linseed, fruit and nuts (400C ish)
Lunch: Tesco finest soup (250C ish)
Dinner: Pasta bake tomato based using up last nights roast chicken (generous 800C could reduce portion size a bit by putting a third back for tomorrows lunch)

Snacks: Christmas cake, a couple of posh chocolates I was given for Christmas

Trouble is I am still not feeling like making sensible choices and still want to eat all the food.

Hello all,

I weighed in today and down 1lb, to 9st 1 (from 9stone 4 at Xmas). Can’t wait to pass the 9stone barrier and get back into the 8s! Hoping to keep up with my usual 10k steps a day, plus two PT sessions and two runs. Replace some of my snack intake with boiled eggs rather than sugar or crisps.

8st 8 / 120lbs by 8 March. Which is 0.5 - 1lb per week.

Wow you’re doing amazing. I’m not far behind you now and can’t wait to be in the 8s again. I’ve also made similar swaps - boiled eggs etc, and focusing on step count. Good luck!

eurotravel · 14/01/2026 07:14

My actually modest increase in gym activity and less crisps in an eve etc is making me ravenous. My scales aren’t reliable but I’m defo feeling more toned and hopefully will slowly drop a few pounds

HolidayBrochure · 14/01/2026 10:43

I fell off the wagon yesterday and ate half a Terry's chocolate orange. I don't know why I sabotage things like that, so annoying. I wasn't feeling well and the chocolate was comforting :-/

I'm still managing to get my 5km walks in at least 5 times a week. I was hoping for daily but life has gotten in the way a bit this week.

@eurotravel I find that can happen as well. It's quite frustrating!

Hoolahoophop · 14/01/2026 10:48

@HolidayBrochure 5km walks 5x a week is brilliant, just fitting that in must be hard.

I too understand the self sabotage. Mine is entirely emotional and I have not yet found a cure. But today is a new day. I hope you are feeling better.

LittleBrownBaby · 15/01/2026 11:46

@thisist1lb more down at 9st 1 now and edging closer to the 8s! Hope you’re doing well! I looked at my BMI yesterday (even though I think it’s a stupid measurement - I’m technically overweight). I’m a size 8 and quite toned from gym and running (still a long way to go). Seeing overweight made me feel pretty cross!

anyway forced me to restart MFP and start focusing more on calorie deficit and then maintenance

Iloveleaveinconditioner · 15/01/2026 13:39

Well, I weighed in after all my Christmas/ new year binge today after a couple of weeks of trying to get back on track and I’m 54.4kgs which I think it’s 8 st 8lbs.

I was bang on 54kgs just before Christmas so an ever slight increase still but I’m also due on today or tomorrow and feeling extremely crampy and bloated which may not be helping the scales either.

We’re away this weekend so eating won’t be great but then for the next 2 weeks after that I’m going to really try and stick to 1200 cals again and see if I can get myself into the 53kg category as I’ve been hovering in the 54kg now for about 4-5 weeks and just want to finally get down below that.

I’m not really sure what my goal is, I definitely look so much better now since I dropped down from 60kg in August last year, which is the heaviest I’ve ever been and I looked awful.

I’ve got a couple of beach holidays booked this year, first one being in May so if I could get down to 52kgs by then I’d be really, really happy and think I’d probably look a bit too thin much lower than that anyway. I’d probably like to maintain from there I guess.

Hoolahoophop · 15/01/2026 13:42

@Iloveleaveinconditioner sounds like you are doing brilliantly, and that is a tiny increase over Christmas by my comparison! Do you mind me asking how tall you are? I was 58kg beginning of last year 54 by the end of the year....back up to 57 since Christmas! So a similar but much slower loss for me as you have had, but I put it ALL back on indulging over Christmas.

Thank you!

I’m 5’3 so pretty short! I can’t get away with much weight gain at all really, it goes straight to my stomach and face Blush

Wishing you well in your journey, sounds like we are aiming for similar things!

Hoolahoophop · 15/01/2026 13:54

it goes straight to my stomach and face

Same here, though I am only 4ft 10......so very, very obvious and very, very hard to loose.

Lollylavender · 15/01/2026 14:05

May I ask what ‘petite’ means (I mean I know it means small in french). Is it related to height?

I would say it’s height and frame, but it’s probably subjective.

CortieTat · 15/01/2026 16:01

I think it’s both height and frame, I’m 5’3 with relatively long legs so I can usually wear regular size trousers, but my shoe size is 3 and I also have teen-size wrist circumference.

Hellohihola · 15/01/2026 19:32

Have decided not to weigh myself for a few weeks and stick to how I am feeling. I am on week 3 of my new strength training programme which I am loving and it is keeping me motivated! However this week I have been under the weather, so I have not been moving quite so much and today I did sabotage myself with a family size bar of galaxy (damn you exDP being super kind bringing me chocolate but still) which I decided after demolishing it will have to be my evening meal! I am not overweight so I don’t mind having a bad day/week here or there, but I do have goals and I do wish to be more toned and less wobbly in areas. I really do need to reign in the sugar it is my downfall!

In the shops I think petite ranges are scaled down to fit women 5ft 3 and under. So waist in different place, probably narrower shoulders.

I'm under 5ft but do not look petite, I'm not small framed just very short!

SlimGin · 16/01/2026 14:06

Happy with my weigh in this morning, finally back to pre Xmas weight. Our whole family have been on a bit of a health kick - I’ve reduced sugar intake for DD1 which means a lot more homemade snacks and fewer desserts with high sugar content. If anyone has any easy pudding recipes with low/no sugar I’d be interested! Currently smashing out the banana pancakes but not sure how much longer they’ll hold their appeal 😅
I’m also trying to reduce UPF intake across the family and have started baking bread. Only problem is DP is also on a diet and he is pretty strict, which means DD1 and I will have to eat all the bread! May slice it up and freeze it…
On top of this we have started weaning DD2 so I feel like I live in the kitchen now!
Exercise wise I’ve not been keeping to my 10k steps a day due to all of us catching colds and the horrible weather, but I’ve been doing some mum + baby YouTube workouts and lots of stretching in the evenings. I love a good stretch!

Hoolahoophop · 16/01/2026 14:16

@SlimGin I make sourdough weekly, slice and freeze so we can have it toasted all week. It's fantastic. If we want a softer bread I buy it from the local bakery, their bread tends to go from still warm from the oven when you buy it to stale overnight so I presume it has no additives in it at all. We always have a sliced loaf of that in the freezer.

Hoolahoophop · 16/01/2026 14:17

Also, I seem to remember the Hairy Dieters did a lovely desert making a jelly out of elderflower fizzy water and blueberries.

SlimGin · 16/01/2026 21:31

@Hoolahoophopyes I need to get into some kind of routine of baking/slicing/freezing and see how long that lasts us.

Thanks for the elderflower + blueberry tip off, might be too sophisticated for my DD but a fruity jelly will definitely be a fun option.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/01/2026 11:16

I need spring to spring. I'm settling for maintainence mode for now. Activity routines have been establishing well this month, but my body does like comfort carbs when it's cold (and add in hormonal energy eating).

It's so much easier when your extremities are constantly warm and salad is appealing (and tastes more ripe with fewer air miles!)

ObelixtheGaul · 25/01/2026 12:15

I've ballooned over the Christmas period to 9 stone 4lb. At 5 foot 2 inches, that's only a few pounds off being officially overweight for my height.
I've cut out the little extras - biscuits, cakes, etc. I've never been a big savoury carbs eater apart from bread. But I'm post menopause, and the subtle changes I have made are having absolutely no effect whatsoever.

The problem is, my husband doesn't think there's a problem. This means I have to be a bit surreptitious about diet. He thinks I just have to accept that women put on weight over a certain age, I'm not fat, I don't need to worry. We alternate cooking, so following a diet plan I really need him to be on board, but he isn't.

Can anyone else relate?

Fibrous · 25/01/2026 13:28

My DP has a bmi of 18! People kept telling him he’d get fat as he got older but he’s in his forties now and still a rake. His sister is the same. He’s six foot and weighs almost the same as me at 5’1. We both run but he looks like a runner and I don’t. We eat the same food but me about half what he eats and a lot less sugar but my bmi is 24! I also have two greyhounds who are super skinny but eat like horses. It makes me realise you can’t fight genetics.

but yeah, I sympathise, because our house is always full of treats because he says he’ll waste away if he doesn’t eat loads of cake and biscuits and he’s probably right. Which means I also eat cake and biscuits because I have no willpower.

eurotravel · 25/01/2026 14:27

Finally dared weigh. My scales are cheap rubbish ones but looks like I may have shed a kilo!!

Hoolahoophop · 26/01/2026 09:13

I'm with you for the envy of naturally high metabolism folk. My brother is a foot taller than me and built like a rake, eats like a race horse.

But hey ho. We do what we can.

I have a brisket joint in the slow cooker on timer at the moment. Looking forward to that tonight with some roasties and lots of veg. Its miserable outside where I am today so slow cooked beef and gravy will be just the ticket.

Havre put in all my planned food for the day and it comes in at 1600 calories, above my target, so might have to cut out some of the fruit snacks.
