How have I managed it??

I have been going to the gym with a PT for the last 6 months… progress has been slow as am in peri but progress is being made and I can see my arms / legs changing shame - the meno belly is being more stubborn.

Went on holiday and maintained.

I’ve been back on the low carbs and back in the gym last 2 weeks. Feeling horribly stressed out by work.

Went to the gym yesterday and woke with terrible DOMS. Got up to weigh myself this morning, hoping for a loss and I’ve put on 5 BLOODY POUNDS!! Whyyyyyyyyy?!!

It will be water. It's so discouraging when that happens. But thinking logically there is no way you could have gained 5lbs of fat in one day. Just keep plugging away and you will re-set. Just realised I've assumed you weigh daily which is what my pt asks me to do.

Firstly, I don’t know what DOMS is 🤔

But, if you are gaining muscle and definition in your arms etc, then you’re doing well.

Stop being so weight-led and be more measurement-led.

We should all be working on adding/maintaining muscle and bone density as we age and that is so much more important than the number on a scale.

Are you feeling fitter? Are you able to bend easier/lift more/continue cardio exercise for longer? Those are your real gains, not the weight.

It's water! How do people not know how bodies work? You can't gain fat overnight. DOMS are muscles repairing after damage and that process uses a lot of water, so you retain it for longer and the scales will show heavier. Drink plenty and it will pass.

Gingernaut · 20/08/2025 08:57

DOMS is delayed onset muscle soreness

Some of us develop muscle soreness days after working out

I hate it

Yes, water! I’m always a good few pounds up after a holiday…but then I usually pee like hell for a couple of days & it’s gone!

I always weigh more after a tough training session.
it's normal to retain some water whist muscle is healing (doms) and gaining.
