Well tried second nature. South beach diet. Orlistat. Exercise and still not losing weight.
My GP says if I havent lost any weight in 3 weeks she will stop Orlistat as its obviously not working.
She hasnt suggested anything further.

What is your calorie expenditure and calorie intake?

Longdarkteatimeofthesoul · 12/03/2024 23:42

Are you in a calorie deficit? Are you counting calories? If you are not counting calories and have calculated what you need to lose weight then you wont lose weight.

TheShellBeach · 12/03/2024 23:46

I'm on Orlistat and find it works well.
I do count calories as well. Do you?
I've also found that intermittent fasting helps enormously.

If you're not in a calorie deficit, you won't lose weight.

ElleSmith · 13/03/2024 07:06

Have you considered discussing with your GP the possibility of seeing a dietitian or nutritionist for personalized advice? They might be able to offer tailored suggestions based on your specific situation and needs. but girl don't stop following your diet.

Calorie counted... .tried intermittent fasting . All of it. Orlistat was a beacon of hope but that hasnt worked either. I dont want those injections and GP says our health authority dont provide anyway. Im so fed up

OP posts:
TheShellBeach · 13/03/2024 10:26

How many calories a day are you having?

I'm on 1700 plus Orlistat. I'm also disabled and don't move about much. I still lose weight.

TheShellBeach · 13/03/2024 10:27

Have you had your thyroid checked?

2024istheyearforme · 13/03/2024 10:36

I was on Orlistat but it didn't work for me either then again my diet wasn't fatty it was sugary id say.

I'm on wegovy now which is working but i know you don't want injections. Have you done a food journal and given it to your dr? maybe they can see an issue, my issue is sugar .. 1 little bit of sugar and im gaining weight, even if its in coffee. its strange but i just cant do sugar :o

TheShellBeach · 13/03/2024 11:11

I think that it's important not to rely on Orlistat, unless you're also making some dietery changes.

I find I can't eat much bread, or I don't lose weight. I know it shouldn't matter if the calorie deficit is there, but I love bread and toast, and if I eat one slice, I always want more.

Potatoes don't have such a disastrous effect. But I do limit the quantity.

LegoTherapy · 13/03/2024 11:50

I assume the GP did baseline bloods so has checked your thyroid? Our Practice stopped Orlistat if no effect within a certain length of time.
If you want to share your diet and exercise then maybe posters could try and help? It's difficult to know where things are going wrong without the details. Do you track on something like my fitness pal? It was when I did that that I realised I'd been fooling myself about how much I was eating. Denial was far easier than admitting I was eating too much. I've lost 2 stone since doing that and eat all the food groups but mainly carbs. Carbs are good. I weigh 56kg now at 5'3"you'd be very welcome on the LOSE IT threads. They are the main reason I succeeded. You can do this OP!

Dinkiedoo · 13/03/2024 17:39

Ive cut out carbs now. 2 slices of bacon...one egg fir breakfast. Salad for lunch similar for tea...meat veg. I dont drink alcohol I dont eat sweets . Thyroid checked before starting tablets as have hypothyroidism. I exercise every day. Its puzzling me and so depressing. Im 5ft 5 and am 14 stone 7

TheShellBeach · 13/03/2024 18:07

How many calories a day are you eating?

LegoTherapy · 13/03/2024 19:02

That sounds like a depressingly small amount of food. There can't be many calories in that.

Is your thyroid being treated effectively? It's not my area of expertise but I know a lot of here say that the normal ranges in the (NHS) uk are not optimal compared to other countries and private tests.

How active are you?

MiltonNorthern · 13/03/2024 19:07

You haven't said how many calories you're eating. If you're expecting orlistat to work without altering your food intake it won't.

CortieTat · 13/03/2024 19:33

I suggest tracking everything you eat, that includes milk in coffee/tea, snacks and so on. A salad for lunch can be anything between 300 to 900 and more kcal, so without knowing exactly how many calories you eat every day it’s hard to lose weight.

suki1964 · 13/03/2024 20:17

You are not answering your calorie intake, its really important

I put your weight and height into a calculator and put your age in as 35 and for you to loose 1lb a week you need 1,725 calories a day. To loose 2lb a week you are down to 1200 calories. I also put you down as light exercise

What you are eating probably isnt enough and your body is storing.

You need to eat your calories in the healthiest way possible. Fill half or 2/3s of every plate or bowl with fruit or veg or even a mix - I throw grapes onto a salad for example. Im not scared of eating fruit and salad for breakfast

Actually in this COL we are living through, its my veg bill thats the hardest to find :(

So if you like a cooked breakfast, have it. Change the bacon to medallions or trim off all fat. Turkey rashers are lower calories. Skip the sausages. Eat eggs, use a spray bottle for oil if you want to fry an egg, but try poached or scrambled or omelette . Add mushrooms ( I microwave with a dash of water and lots of seasoning ) grilled tomatoes, spinach. If you want toast, use wholemeal ( if you are going to use calories on bread, get the roughage at least ) if you want something different try air fried cold cooked potato slices or make potato cakes from cold plain mashed spuds bound with an egg

Dont be afraid of potatoes, great filler upper, its the added fats that the problem. So I eat potatoes, plain boiled ( with a gravy dish so they arent dry ) I make wedges and air fry, chips, air fry, do jacket spuds

Cut the milk to skimmed and measure it. Its amazing how many calories slip through if you are a constant tea or coffee drinker

Try to cook from scratch if you can. That way you have control of the sugar, salt and fat content. I make a mean chicken tikka massala for example and only use 1 tbs of fat ( oil ) and yet its as flavoursome as any they you would buy

Im on 1200 calories a day as Im smaller, possibly older, and not as heavy and I aim on just loosing a pound a week. I look at my 1200 calories think thats sod all, wouldn't fill a tooth, and then have to work out how Im going to be fed, be full, be satisfied and still have a wee treat

And to get that 1lb a week, I walk my socks off on top of it all :)

Seriously it doesn't matter what plan you are on, the only thing that will work is a calorie deficit. But it has to be a manageable deficit. You cannot cut so low that you are hungry or so low that when the weight shifts and you go happy days and go back to how you used to eat that the weight comes back twice as quick

It takes a lifetime to learn the bad habits that got us overweight, dont expect to un learn them or miss them in 12 weeks.

Today Ive had a crap day, I work in a restaurant /coffee shop. It was dead, no management, food popped itself in my gob all day. So I know today Ive gone well over ( dont even need to check ) and tonights tea Ive had to choose not to have ( would have been grand if I hadn't pigged out all day ) and Im going to take a poached egg on a salad. Im not even hungry yet, but I know if I dont take the time to make something now, Ill be at the biscuits at 10pm

Dont give up. If you have decided the weight needs to go, keep trying but Im afraid you are going to have to be boring and learn the calorific value of everything you eat

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 13/03/2024 20:29

How rigorous are you being about tracking your food and drinks, are you weighing out portions? Are you counting milk in tea/coffee, condiments etc?

I did as suggested above and calculated my BMR. I eat 500 calories below that and track everything and I've lost 20lb since Jan 1st.

It only works though if you are accurate in the tracking.

Dinkiedoo · 13/03/2024 21:39

Im on Second Nature plan so all meals are cooked from scratch. Portion control adhered to . I dont eat any more or less than they say. Ive worked out my calories and its 1500 give or take x i do an hours exercise a day .vary my workouts . Cardio weights etc so not doing sane thing every day. Thyroid within levels . I have one cup of tea with skimmed milk per day. Drink water otherwise. No fizzy or other drinks.
