Are they the ones that profess to measure body fat etc? If so save your money, they are nonsense.

Really? Do you not think they are accurate at all? I was wondering about their accuracy
too actually but I just Bought one the other day. When the body fat machine in my local boots is working again I’ll check against their reading.

@indieray this is the one i bought.

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B09DS6TPJV?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

You download an app and when you stand on it the app sends all your details , (body fat , muscle mass etc) to display on the app and the weight displays on the scale itself . And it records all the details weight etc for each reading so you can compare your progress.

I actually wanted to use the Boots machine to check bodyfat but every time I go to use it it’s broken and I don’t know where else to get checked for things that so out of frustration I ordered the smart scales.

I think in health messaging there needs to be less focus on weight alone, and instead other metrics such as body fat should be more easily available and recommended as a way of checking health.

I go to two different gyms and neither of them have a body fat monitor. GPs have scales for weight but not sure if they have things to monitor body fat and other things?

Yes I'm afraid they are wildly inaccurate. The only accurate ways to measure body fat are with a DEXA scan (medical machinery) or possibly using skin fold callipers only if you are trained in how to use them properly. The scales you are talking about are not accurate and are affected by things like how much food and water you have consumed etc.

I agree that scale weight is only one way of measuring progress and not always a healthy one but I think progress photos, how clothes fit etc are better measures.

OK well that’s disappointing lol but thanks for the advice- I’ll look into finding someone who can use callipers.

yeah that make sense about progress photos and clothes. I’m now almost back in my size 10 trousers after being a size 14 this time last year but my scale weight has barely changed since March.

Ok why does it matter what your weight and body fat percentage is? You know your body has changed and you've dropped dress sizes. I'm guessing you feel better and prefer the way you look now? Why do the numbers matter?

greenspaces4peace · 05/02/2023 04:55

They do weigh you accurately. Uploading the info to a variety of graphs and sites.
a good scale is very helpful at monitoring weight loss or gain over time.
my Nokia scale, Apple Watch, iPhone, cronometer (food diary) all link and upload automatically.

The possibly are wildly inaccurate but accidentally getting a smart set of scales when our last set of scales died and seeing my apparent body fat percentage and metabolic age has had more impact on my diet than anything else has done for a couple of years.

Ours are Renpho ones.

Health reasons. Someone can look fairly slim but have a high body fat percentage including internal fat around the organs which is a big risk factor for all sorts of health issues.

Smart scales also tell you other things like muscle mass & bone mass etc, their accuracy is apparently debatable but if they do work, that’s the point of them.

lovem · 05/02/2023 06:13

I don't think they're accurate but you can take the "fat" digit they give you and try to make it go down.

tilestoclean · 05/02/2023 10:50

They have been clinical trials which have proven their inaccuracy so if you are looking at health measures they are therefore one of the worst tools you can use. Scale weight sure but not fat or lean mass % or bone density.

Reclaimtheoutdoors · 05/02/2023 12:29

Perhaps the scales are inaccurate, pp have suggested other ways of getting the info …callipers etc, but the health point was in response to why is body fat figures needed.

definitely body fat percentages and other metrics can be important and IMO it’s a shame most of us don’t have easy access to accurate readings on this so people fixate on weight scale and BMI which are actually of very limited usefulness and don’t take into account the diversity in body composition including within different ethnicities.

OP, hope you find something/somewhere for the readings you want and get accurate ones!

Thanks for all
