I have a massive amount of weight to lose (70lbs). This is obviously a long term project so after much thinking (read: procrastination) - I want to start OMAD.

None of the other diets worked for me (I tried Atkins, Dukan, keto, Noom, etc). I also have a 3yo and a husband who can't cook so making separate meals for myself is not something I can do as I also work full time. When I was travelling for business last year, I stumbled upon OMAD by accident (I was so busy that I genuinely didn't have time to eat more than once a day) and for the first time in what feels like forever - I felt GREAT! I had more energy, I was losing weight, I was in a good mood and I wasn't feeling hungry or guilty if I ate red meat or a piece of bread.

So I did my research, spoke with my GP and given that I don't have any medical conditions (and I am not on any meds) that would be an obstacle - I got the green light to try this.

My plan is: 1 meal per day at 6 or 7pm (so that we have one family meal), try to consume less carbs but no pressure not to consume any and once I'm below 200lbs (and body got used to the diet) - start speed walking (1h per day in the mornings).

However, what I really need is a partner - someone I can talk to, someone to hold me accountable and someone to commiserate with on bad days.

Morning all.

Quickest of posts sorry as I am heading to work early today.

I have really struggled this weekend so did not feel I could post. I have had second meals since Friday I think. But back on today and am thinking I might have to schedule in a second meal every 3rd day or so as a mental way to keep me on track.... but yes I agree with the reflections on the thread about going with your body sometimes.

Hope everyone is well Thanks and has a good day

LeatherSkirt82 · 13/03/2023 11:26

Hey, I struggled as well this weekend (really bad PMS!). What I did manage is to limit my food intake in the second meal to only veggies or fruit (apples, tomatoes, peppers or cucumber) and to keep both meals within 4h window. Result is - no change on the scales. So, I didn't lose anything, but thankfully I also did not gain.

Got my period now, so hopefully back on track. Not hungry today, on my second coffee atm and having to remind myself to drink water but otherwise fine.

Good to hear from you both @LeatherSkirt82 and @WiltingLobelia.

I failed on pretty much every count in week 3 - no 48 hour fast, no OMAD on Week 3 Day 7, very little exercise. There were unexpected events like snow, some illness in the house, but the point for me is to make this a way of life.

It was illuminating learning how much I eat when I’m bored. I also have to break the habit of eating while also taking in other stimulus (reading / watching TV) as Fung says. That I know will be difficult.

Week 3 is also the time where I traditionally give up and go back to my old habits.

However, I’m still here! Week 4 Day 1 today and I’ll be putting what I’ve learnt over the last few weeks into practice 🤞Don’t eat while bored, don’t eat while reading, focus on the food that I’m putting in my gut.

ethermint · 14/03/2023 09:26

good morning all! sounds like we are all struggling a bit the last few days. I did some socialising and allowed myself some treats at the weekend too! eek. carbs and beer and chocolate!!

Back on a fasting day today. Can't bear to look at the scales but will try to get some yoga and other exercise in!!!

tomorrow we are going to a nice cafe with a friend so provided I fast today I should be ok to enjoy something there.

the main thing is to get back on the wagon again today and keep the general trend mostly down.

Keep up the good work everyone and do forgive yourself if you've not been perfect - we are human after all! 💐

ethermint · 14/03/2023 09:28

I also found this recipe online which I have been salivating over, so may try to make a variation on it this week

hotcooking.co.uk/recipes/dishoom-house-black-daal

looks quite good for fasting because high protein as well as healthy and some fat to keep you full. Although looks a bit long to cook!

LeatherSkirt82 · 14/03/2023 09:29

@SpaceOpera that is so true - I also noticed that if I am eating whilst doing something else (watching TV, reading etc.) then I tend to eat way more. This is why I decided to make my OMAD our family meal - to prevent having to eat that one meal on my own and slip into reading whilst eating etc.

Yesterday was good - some cramps so don't really feel like exercising but food-wise was good. Had some butter-garlic seared scallops with samphire and broccoli. Turned that into creamy pasta for the family and it was a nice Monday meal - plus really quick to make.

I WAS craving sweets but medjool date sorted that one out for me. Really need to up my game re: food now. Considering full keto OMAD. Thoughts?

@ethermint that looks delicious!

OP posts:
WiltingLobelia · 14/03/2023 10:02

Yes I need to remind myself is that this is a way of life I hope and so the general trend will be down. :)

That meal sounds amazing @LeatherSkirt82 . I adore scallops. Today we are having pumpking and pinenut ravioli with fresh green pesto and because I want to up the vegetable quotient I also plan to make a thick cream of vegetable soup as a starter. With loads of nutmeg. Delicious!

I have not been exercising lately as have been really busy, but hope I can get back to that next week as well.

SpaceOpera · 14/03/2023 22:33

Week 4 Day 1: I was tempted and I fell. Sigh. Had a snack at about 10:30. I was stressed from dealing with teenager son. Just wanted to eat and bury my head in a book.

ok. Let’s try again tomorrow. Night all x

ethermint · 15/03/2023 09:37

good morning all! yesterday I fasted all day although I did have oat milk in my coffee (twice!) to get through. I'll take that rather than the last few days. Because of my weekend of wild abandon my body needed a few calories!!

I'll be eating later, I made a nice black bean stew type affair and i'm headed to a cafe with friends for lunch so some foodstuffs may be involved.

tomorrow will be fasting again, trying to shift some beer cals from last week!

getting back on the wagon and it was much easier yesterday even if I faltered a bit

tatteddear · 15/03/2023 09:53

I've been doing ok ish after a poor weekend. Managed Monday and Tuesday with no snacking. I'm starving today however and out walking dogs which is my part time gig all day so I may succumb to a snack-I've got some boiled eggs ready just in case as I figure if im going to snack it might as well be a protein one!

I've lost a bit of weight I think-jeans feel slightly looser-but can weigh as scales still packed from
House move.

Teenagers are the thing that have me breaking fasts too-I'm very much a stress eater!

LeatherSkirt82 · 15/03/2023 11:41

Sorry to hear everyone is struggling a bit. Let's get those chins up ladies - we can do this!!!! I am determined not to let my PMS last weekend to stray me from my goal. I took out 'summer goal' trousers and hanged them in my home office so that they're the first thing I see when I get my head up from the screen. So far its being a good deterrence from food. Grilled beef patties with broccolini and lettuce/horseradish salad tonight!

ethermint · 16/03/2023 10:57

good morning everyone! i had a day out with a friend and kids yesterday and it involved more bad eating than I would have liked. But am fasting again today! I managed 12k steps yesterday though, so hopefully wore off some cals. Tomorrow I have lunch with friends so fasting today seems a good idea. Not stepping on the scales for a few days - too much falling off the wagon recently! So am building up again towards getting back on after I've been good.

I was reading that eating certain foods before our main meals are good for preventing carb or fat absorption and also others have digestive enzymes that can help prevent blood sugar rises, so am trying to incorporate to my diet. Lemon juice, apple cider vinegar taken with or before meals is meant to be good to prevent carb overload etc. So I am trying to do matcha with lemon before meals, or ACV on salads. A few almonds taken before meals apparently great for this too! They have digestive enzymes that help us metabolise fat and foods preventing too much weight gain! Also pineapple meant to be excellent for enzymes to help prevent weight loss so incorporating a little into our meals or before again is a good idea.

ethermint · 16/03/2023 11:01

*pineapple prevents weight GAIN that should say

SpaceOpera · 16/03/2023 14:45

Week 2 Day 2: Fast on a Wednesday.

Exercise: 9k run

Post-fast weight:59.3 kilos, so it’s down by a few hundred grams from week 2.

In other news: I’m exhausted - slept 12 hours yesterday - because I don’t maintain a sleep routine. I have to get to bed at a set time and be disciplined about it, otherwise I simply won’t have the energy to exercise and maintain a full schedule.

SpaceOpera · 16/03/2023 14:45

Correction: That should read Week 2 Day 4, which was yesterday.

SpaceOpera · 18/03/2023 11:18

Argh - 15th March was Week 4 Day 2 (fasted).

Week 4 Day 3: 59.3 kilos - trending in the right direction. But did not OMAD. Ate a lot through the day. A mental compensation for the fasting, perhaps?

Week 4 Day 4: OMAD. Walked for an hour and very proud of myself because - instead of a late/night snack - was mindful of sleep hygiene and went to bed. I feel I am ironing out the wobbles and realised the following are key for my mid-life health - along with control of Food:

  • Sleep hygiene
  • Exercise
  • Daily time for reflection and ‘seeing the bigger picture’
  • Minimising social media
  • Ignoring the 24/7 attention-grabbing and fearmongering news cycle - replacing with respected sources that analyse weekly or monthly news
  • some active study of a new skill (intellectual, musical, craft, sport)
  • some study of philosophy or religion to ‘frame’ the second half of my life

I hope this list chimes with others also realising that changing food habits also start to unravel other habits that supported or created those eating patterns 😌

ethermint · 19/03/2023 12:52

@SpaceOpera keep up the good work! I have off days as well, I think that's ok.

I'm at a bit of a static weight this week but having a few better days next week as it will be a lot easier without several social pressures as per last week.

I'm also walking a lot and cooking more healthy food. I just wish there were more hours in the day!!

You're right social media is a bad habit, one I need to get out of.

I think my habits are slowly changing!! The thing I need to work on is having smaller meals then stopping. Harder than it sounds. But with all the progress so far it will come soon!! Something to be worked at, and who said change was going to be easy?

I do find if I exercise more I want to eat healthier.

SpaceOpera · 19/03/2023 21:15

Week 4 Day 5: Didn’t OMAD because the boys wanted me to join them in a late- night Saturday snack and I couldn’t resist.

Week 4 Day 6: OMAD (ish) - had a try of some mochi sweets bought for me on Mother’s Day.

What’s great about writing all this down @ethermint is finding that I don’t have nearly as much willpower as I think I do. I’ve not had a great Week 3 or Week 4. However, I know these two weeks are always hard for me. I’m going to make a real effort for Week 5.

Thank you for all the encouragement!

SpaceOpera · 20/03/2023 22:15

Week 4 Day 7: wow - it’s gone quick!

Did not OMAD because I had a late night snack 🙃

However, did do a 9k run.

Ok - girding my loins for week 5 - let’s see how good I am at being strict with myself - no excuses!

Sending good wishes to all and hope you all had a good Mother’s Day (if that’s your thing).

SpaceOpera · 21/03/2023 07:59

Ok, Week 5. Just read all my posts back. Weeks 1 and 2 were good. Weeks 3 and 4 were when the boredom kicked in and I wavered. I know week 5 is going to be difficult but I just have to grit my teeth and be disciplined.

I’m grateful for being able to record daily and see how my mood and motivation have changed through the weeks. It’s kept me focused on the goal and how many excuses I make to get out of it reaching it. 😀 one has to laugh!

ethermint · 21/03/2023 13:05

Good morning all, I'm still doing ADF, trying to get into a stricter regime. (I hope it's ok to be on this OMAD thread, I just find ADF easier for some reason!).

I found this really great podcast for inspiration on fasting via a reddit post - it's related more to ADF but OMAD is a form of fasting so assume it's relevant to both! Really interesting story about a woman who lost loads of weight and the good reasons to lose it.

Inspiring me to keep on my journey, esp as I had a few difficult days last week!

SpaceOpera · 21/03/2023 20:13

Thank you @ethermint I will put it on my listening list.

Week 5 Day 2:
I did do OMAD today and an hour’s walk. 48 hr fast until Thursday. Come on week 5!

ethermint · 22/03/2023 10:49

Good morning, broke fast at 10am today (36hrs fast) with some decent protein (tofu scramble) even though I was wavering and looking at the sugary granola!! So that's a small win. Going to try to eat healthily today - lots of protein and veggies - then back on the fasting wagon tomorrow.

Managed 20 mins of yoga / hiit yesterday along with 12k steps, so not doing too bad.

Today I look like a scarecrow from the school run wind and rain! But at least we didn't get the bus. Going to try to fit in some more low impact HIIT today, even 5 mins will do for me.

SpaceOpera · 24/03/2023 21:53

Week 5 Day 3: 9k run but did not fast, OMAD
Week 5 Day 4: Gardening for an hour and an hour's walk. Did not even OMAD
Week 5 Day 5: OMAD

I'm wondering if I really want to lose weight at all! I seem to be falling off the wagon every week 🤔
