I’m so depressed I’ve been eating between 500-1000 calories a day for over a week now and working out everyday, walking plus doing fat burn and squat challenge YouTube videos and cross trainer. Before this I did zero fitness and ate probably 3000 calories a day. Like I would wake up and have two chocolate bars eat McDonald’s every other day really really bad. Weighted myself this morning and I’ve gained 4 pounds?? I’m so disappointed and don’t know where I’ve gone wrong! Any tips please.
Food wise I’m having a morning coffee changed my milk to skimmed, then banana and slimfast shake, meal under 500 calories and a small chicken salad for dinner.

OP, you poor thing, no wonder you're feeling rubbish after all that sacrifice and effort. Please come and join the Weight Loss January thread. I joined the Oct group mid Oct and have found each thread so good for motivation and keeping on track as well as support if I've had a crap day/ week. We're a friendly lot and HalfShrunk is an inspiration full of great tips. I've slowly lost 13lbs in about 11 weeks and have 2 more stone to go. I know I'll do it with this support on MN.

I hate to hear of anyone struggling, esp when you've had a recent sadness. please join us.

The same thing happened to me OP, until I had about 3 consecutive days where I fell off the wagon then started back again and the weight started coming off then. I will say thought that I put on a huge amount of weight (water?) the first few days of my period and also mid cycle, which can seem really disheartening.

@velvetcandy cut your workout. You are overdoing it. Read here why your workouts have caused your weight gain.
health.clevelandclinic.org/just-started-exercising-gaining-weight/

Now the other posters are right. By eating crap, fake foods, you won't succeed. Sure the calorie deficit at some point will make you lose but the second you stop, you will gain it all back plus more because your gut has the memory of a fat person. change the gut with flavonoids from colour-rich fruit and veg, not only will you lose the weight, but your cravings will stop, and you won't gain it back www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/11/161129091143.htm

Thanks @Cormoran

Does anyone know the best workouts to do at home to burn fat please?

Hi velvet candy
It sounds like you've been doing extremely well with both diet and exercise. I just wanted to say that when I go on a diet or generally try to cut down on calories it takes 2 to 3 weeks to ever see any reduction on the scales and then suddenly I'm several pounds down ( it's like my body weight takes a while to adjust). For this reason I only weigh myself once ever 3 weeks otherwise I know I'll be disappointed. I would stick with it, forget about the scales for now and weigh again in a couple more weeks and I'll bet you'll see a loss.

Mrsmorton · 10/01/2021 08:21

I second the obesity code, changes the way you think about eating. I got the audio book and have been listening to it during long walks.

MattWanksock · 10/01/2021 08:21

You should not be eating between 500 and 1000 calories a day. You need to cut by 500 a day for the duration of the week. If it's less one day and more another then fine. Eating less than a child should won't help you. You won't have gained much muscle yet.

Water retention due to salty food or other things could be there cause. I wouldn't weigh myself tbh. It's more about how you look and feel and how clothes fit.

What's your TDEE? How much you ate before won't affect how much you're losing now. It just means you won't be gaining.

Charles11 · 10/01/2021 08:21

Are you constipated? I tried a slimfast diet once with a friend and neither of us lost weight. Maybe it doesn’t suit everyone?
I lose weight by eating more fruit and veg and less carbs.

MattWanksock · 10/01/2021 08:26

@velvetcandy do you have Instagram? There are some very good fitness mentors on there posting free workout ideas. However, exercise helps but it's your mindset for the other 23 hours of the day. Focus on that and the weight loss will follow. You just need to be in a consistent calorie deficit, exercise can help your metabolism and create a higher deficit or mean you can eat more and maintain a deficit but it's the least important part of your weight loss journey.

Walking is actually really good and easy!

MattWanksock · 10/01/2021 08:27

Also, fuck the slim fast off. For that amount of calories you can half a chicken breast and veg and feel much more satiated.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 10/01/2021 08:31

Exercise wise, try TeamBody Project. There are free workouts on YouTube. I love them. They're fun and low impact but you will soon see you are burning the calories.

I enjoy doing the Our Parks Couch to fitness programme. I don't necessarily move on to the next video according to the plan, if I don't feel I'm ready to move to the harder stage then I repeat a week.

Lots of people swear by the walking with leslie videos on YouTube too.

Skyliner001 · 10/01/2021 08:50

You are eating so few calories that your body will be preserving what it already has, and one week is too little time to see any difference anyway.

I would up the calories to 1200 to 1500 daily, be very rigid about making sure you lock everything, and expect to see results in four weeks

KihoBebiluPute · 10/01/2021 08:51

Echoing as above to ditch the fake diet foods. Aim for at least 1300 calories a day - too low will give you to metabolic problems that will complicate your health.

I went from a little under 18st to around 12st between March and December last year. I have regained a little over Christmas but will get that off again and keep going.

For me what has been working is real food, avoid processed convenience stuff, morethan 50% veg, around 30% protein In each meal and portion controlling a much much lower serving size than I used to eat.

I is ok to split your calorie allowance into numerous small meals of that helps you get through the day. I found that eating 200-250 calories at a time with 5-6 such meals a day was easier to cope with but it is time-consuming.

lemonsquashie · 10/01/2021 09:56

Are you being 100% honest about what you're eating? Write very single mouthful down.

velvetcandy · 10/01/2021 17:24

Thanks everyone I’ve upped my calories today and feel much better and will check out some of the links etc above regarding workouts x
