Callanetics Countdown for Christmas?

froggy1811 · 18/09/2020 06:43

I have literally just purchased a Callanetics dvd on Amazon Prime (by accident, I might add!) BUT, I'm wondering if this 'accident' may be fates intervention, because my belly and thighs need, well - intervention!

Would anyone like to join me on a weight/physique improvement plan on the run up to Christmas, coz I'm really in need of an improvement, and figured it might be motivating if we do this together....

Really? Wow, I'd love you to advise me on where I'm going wrong with the bum exercises?
.
I think the other exercises seem very effective (i.e the hip rotations, the Plies etc.) But why is it that these bum exercises seem to have no effect whatsoever? Am I doing them wrong!.

I am trying so hard to practice 'correct form' BUT if you have any tips, please do share them ...
I'm really loving the stretches and the moves; but would really like to benefit from the booty exercises too!

@IWillWearTallGreenWellies

Yes, I'm doing it! I've done the warm up and hip and bum exercises two days running now and feel pleasantly stretched by it, IYSWIM.

Today I am still deciding between thigh and stomach exercises. I find it's ok if I do these exercises in the evening, it doesn't wake me up too much. They only take 15-20 minutes (and they still bloody hurt!!) so I'm really hoping to keep going.

However, right now I have to hoover while the dog is out (he attacks it otherwise 🤦‍♀️)

Well done for all your hard work!

I've done it everyday this week (bar today...) and I know I need to continue if I want to see results ...am aiming to for a nicer figure come Xmas...

With the bum exercises the seated ones really need perfect form with core engaged and proper hip rotation some people really used to struggle in class and almost had to lie down whilst others were quite high so find your sweet spot. I find it helps if you stop take a breath and really think about the muscle Callan is intending you to use. Your glutes work in different ways so one exercise will target gluteus maximus and another will target minimus. If you can do 100 pulses straight off you're prob doing it wrong. She was also way ahead of the curve on core stability so use the warm ups, they are essential to fire up your core and then keep it at around 40% switched on. 100 % you can't breathe 0% you're letting it hang.
I used to do a lot of the exercises when I was learning in the swimming pool when I took the kids as the challenge to hold position in water really teaches you about stability. Finally I think it helps to 'perform' Callan was a trained ballerina if I recall and if you imagine yourself as a ballerina performing that sense of lengthening and fluidity helps the exercises be perfect. I really miss teaching now I'm writing this. I might start an old lady callanetics in the village hall when Covid is over Grin

If you’re on Facebook there’s a Callanetics page and I found a half hour class on there that’s great. I did it yesterday and I can feel it today!

superstar63 · 29/05/2021 06:21

Is anyone still doing this and getting results?

Are there any classes in Lancashire/NorthnWest as Ithink it would be helpful for proper form etc.

I did try this in 80's and found it really hard to get right.

froggy1811 · 30/05/2021 13:48

Hi all, sorry for disappearing! I did it for three months and dropped over two dress sizes! Unfortunately, lock depression set in and I haven't done it in a while; however, I'm starting again on Tuesday! I was using a combination of the DVDs (1980s one on amazon prime that cost me just a few quid) and also the books! I don't know of any classes superstar63, but I'm in the same area so if anyone else does please let us know!

Lock down depression I meant to say!

I could do with a tone up. I had the dvd. No idea where it is now, nor the dvd player! Is it on you tube???

froggy1811 · 30/05/2021 14:37

BettySweaty if you have Amazon prime you can pay a few pounds and it's then just there and available for you to use (in my case I have a computer linked up to my TV - no idea how my son did this but all I do is type Amazon in and sign in etc.) No dvd player required! You can buy dvds though, which have been made by newer callanetics instructors, so a bit more modern! Personally though, I prefer the original and I'm 39 so was just a wee baby when they were being made! Lol

When I looked on YouTube ages ago they only had 'snippets' of it, but not checked in a good while! Some of the moves are fool proof though - such as the on where you sit on the floor with a chair Infront and you grasp the legs with your feet! You tend to remember them when you've been doing them for a while, so when you only have time for a 5 minute workout this is handy!

I would say it definitely DOES work, and I prefer it to any of the other workout routines I've ever done, BUT I feel that 'arms' don't get a great deal of attention, so what I was doing was adding some counter top push ups into the beginners routine (you can find this move easily on YouTube)!

froggy1811 Thanks for suggesting Amazon, I would never have thought of that but have seen the "snippets" on Youtube.

I found the arms ones on Youtube easy enough to replicate and also the squeezing your ankles on a chair and it is a good idea to do them as and when which suits me as I am not sure i would commit to a whole hour.

I know the sitting down ones for legs were very hard to get right back in the day so will have a look on Amazon.

Bumping this thread because it inspired me to sign up online and try out '10 Years Younger in 10 Hours'. I've just done the first hour and am typing this with my nose, the only part of me that's not a puddle on the floor.

This is excellent, this is just what I needed! So thanks for the inspo, I'd never heard of Callan until I stumbled across this thread somehow.

Is anyone else doing Callanetics right now, or would care to join me in a challenge to get through at least ten hours?

MovinOnUp · 29/06/2021 00:56

I bought the A.M/P.M callanetics programme from Amazon prime AGES ago.
Haven't started yet 🙄
I aim to start on Wednesday.
I need to drop at least 3 stones as soon as possible, So I'm cutting out all processed food, walking an hour a day and doing callanetics morning and night (to begin with anyway, hoping to add in some cardio and weights later)

AmorFati · 29/06/2021 01:41

Hi @MovinOnUp!

Right there with you, I want to lose 16kg, which is two and a half stone? (somehow it sounds worse in stone), so I'm trying to eat less junk, but mostly I need to get fit!

I've been walking a lot and climbing hills, it's Winter here in NZ, and I have a skiing trip booked in August, I haven't skied in over 25 years! It's great motivation, if I don't get fit I will be destroyed by the end of the first day!

Is your user name from Curtis Mayfield? Love that song!

froggy1811 · 01/07/2021 08:51

Guys, you will definitely lose inches doing the exercises! I dropped over 2 dress sizes in about three months, because it tones you up really well! The amount of timber I lost from my legs was amazing actually, but the weight did come off from everywhere (it was just super noticeable on my upper thighs).

Also, it's well worth mentioning that you become so much more flexible, and it helped me with my joint pain/stiffness which was a lovely added bonus! 😊

I am currently doing callanetics so I'm all in! How are you all getting on today?

OP posts:
AmorFati · 01/07/2021 10:57

Hi @froggy1811!
That's really encouraging!
I've decided to do a three day cycle, Callanetics, then a big hill climb (and long soak in a spa after), then a rest day. Today was my rest day, tomorrow is my second session with Callan, so I will update!
I've worked out that I can use my balcony rail as a barre, so I'm going to get up very, VERY early and take advantage of the cover of darkness. That way I will hopefully only horrify a few seagulls! 😅

AmorFati · 07/07/2021 00:27

Quick update, have just done hour 4, still feel like I'm dying by inches ( three inches off the floor, just an inch, back and forth) but am now doing my hour every day.

Anyone else?

cheezy · 07/07/2021 00:30

That picture has inspired me. I’ve tried it before and it did work but was sooo boring.
