Can someone help me with a Fitbit question please?

I recently bought a Fitbit, trying to lose weight.

Today I have walked 8,300 steps, which sounds about right, but it also says I have burned 2,041 calories! That can't be right surely?

That's including your base level calories - so when you wake up in the morning it will say you've already burnt so many before started steps

Yellowcups · 24/04/2017 19:45

That sounds about right. Why do you think it's wrong? Don't eat that many calories or you'll stay the same weight.

Cellardoor23 · 24/04/2017 19:54

Ok, I think I understand a bit better now, thank you. I've just been reading more about it, as I'm still trying to get the hang of it!

My fitbit has been an amazing weight loss help to me.

I have never been good at counting calories but when I think about what I have burned off it helps me calibrate what I can consume.

Also remember the heavier you are the more calories you burn so it factors in your weight etc.

Also DH and I walk the same exact distance and he earns way more steps than me because he walks like a mincing hobbit
but I love trying to compete with my previous days steps....

Good luck!!

Thank you Grin I know what you mean. It actually makes me think about what I'm eating now too, instead of just aimlessly eating anything without putting much thought into it.

No wonder I'm so over weight!

You'll start to see how many calories you use on a normal day and then sort of adjust what you eat accordingly....

You can't argue with the facts and seeing it in black and white has been very useful for me.

Slow and steady for the weight loss is the way to make changes and keep it off....

sexymuthafunker · 24/04/2017 20:15

Ooh thinking of getting a Fitbit. What type do you all have?

sniffle12 · 24/04/2017 20:20

It's the calories you are on track to burn by the end of the day - including the calories you're using just being alive. So it's meant to guide you as to what you can eat in total.

As I recall when I had a Fitbit, if I didn't do any activity at all, my base calories would be around 1600-1700. If I did a lot of walking, I could get it up to 2200.

comeagainforbigfudge · 24/04/2017 20:22

Oh I've been thinking about getting one as well. But can't decide!

Cellardoor23 · 24/04/2017 20:23

mumsiedarlingrevolta yeah it's been an eye opener. I knew roughly how much I was eating, but I was always about 200/300 calories under what I thought. Which all adds up I suppose!

sexymuthafunker I have the alter. I wanted a fairly basic one and wasn't huge on my wrist. It doesn't monitor your heart rate though, which I wasn't too bothered about.

comeagain I had one of the old fitbits but upgraded for my birthday-have the charge 2 and love love love it.

My blood pressure was a bit high and I like the heart rate info-also the sleep tracker interesting.

It has been really motivational for me....

comeagainforbigfudge · 25/04/2017 10:28

Thanks mumsiedarling

How reliable is the GPS? I use my phone but it's getting uncomfy. Thanks

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 25/04/2017 14:38

comeagain not sure exactly what you mean?
It tracks a walk or run and then gives a little picture on fitbit app on your phone of where you've been...like a map with your route on it-very satisfying :)
Gives you distance, calories, wether it was cardio or fat burning, average pace, splits etc.....
But are you trying to use it to navigate?

Ihatethedailymail1 · 25/04/2017 14:42

i got my charge 2 today for my birthday! am so pleased! I did order it for myself on my dh's amazon account :)

How does the gps work?
and what does floors mean? Just how many times you go up the stairs?

Mu123 · 25/04/2017 14:56

Download myfitnesspal too cellar its interesting/shocking to see how many empty calories you're putting it!

comeagainforbigfudge · 25/04/2017 15:23

mumsiedarling No, not for navigating. I had just read a few reviews of it not working sometimes and that you had to then go on app to see the details. But that sounds perfect.

I'm going to go order one now. Well maybe check I have enough money to pay for it first Blush payday cannot come quick enough

I've been using different types of furniture for the past 3 years. Fitbits without HR tracking tend to exaggerate on the calorie count, in general the consensus is that your more likely to burn fewer calories, but the trend is what matters. For GPS fitbits suck in general. I'm waiting on the Charge 2 as hopefully that one will be better. If you really want accurate GPS tracking, Garmin is your best choice :)

drspouse · 25/04/2017 17:04

I find that my Charge 2 overestimates the calories massively when I use the HR, and is about the same as my old Fitbit One when I don't. So I've turned it off.
