Wine and Weight

I have always been naturally slim, but age and drinking too much wine (a bottle a night - but that is a whole other thread) means I have put on a stone I need to loose. I have cut out the wine during the week but not changed any other aspect of my lifestyle (I eat a normal diet, get some exercise). I have read that a bottle of wine contains approx 600 calories. So, by making this one change, do you think I will loose weight? Currently 9.5 stone and 5'3.

if you cut out the booze and the drunken munchies and up your exercise to get your liver back in shape, yes, you will lose weight

This may sound bizarre and a tad odd, however I used to do the whole bottle of wine a night thing and ended up much heavier as a result. the one thing that worked for me was to buy a bottle on a Monday and leave it on the work top till every chore in the evening was done, tidied up , washing on etc etc, then on my way to bed measure out one normal glass full and take up to bed. I used to have it when tucked up in bed with my book, then switch light out and go to sleep - took the temptation of a second glass/rest of bottle away as that would have meant downstairs lights on etc etc. Got to the point over several months when I would forget to take up with me and could never be bothered to go back for it. I am now a bottle every seven days not each night - its not for everyone but it worked for me, 12lbs off in three months!

Thanks, I don't feel too alone now!

Believe me you are not alone! I am also really trying to cut back on the wine but don't feel in a position to advise as I can't say I've finally got on top of it yet (the last few weeks have been better after joining a one if the weight loss threads on here but I realise it is still early days). Good luck!

I'm so with you on this too!!! I drink a bottle 4-5 nights a week Blush. I was self medicating with it due to depression and extremely poor sleep. Sleeping tablets didn't even work- but wine knocked me out. Anyway, am over the depression now, early days but still- I'm feeling normal again. I also need to reduce the wine!!! In saying that, I started slimming world just over a week ago, I've lost 3 lb, and had my wine too. But that won't last forever, so it will have to go. Might try that 1 glass and bed thing- thanks!!

God yes. I noticed a difference after a week and wasn't drinking as much as you. My belly just melted off.

I saw on TV that a large glass of white wine has more calories than a chocolate donut! Also when I drink I then lose any will power a stuff my face!

I also read that any weight you put on due to alcohol goes straight to the tummy, my tummy really does stick out compared to the rest of me.

Trust me, you WILL lose weight. I had quite the drink problem at one point (anything from a bottle of wine to a litre of vodka per night, but once again, that's a whole other story!), and once I quit, within 3 months I'd lost well over 2 stone. I didn't change my diet - in fact, I was eating MORE, and not anything particularly healthy either - but booze contains SO many empty calories I'd be more surprised if you didn't lose weight by cutting it out!

Milllli · 24/04/2015 16:35

I stopped drinking years ago. Made no difference to my weight. I think it's the food you eat with it that puts the weight on . Mindless munching.

Howhardcanitbe · 27/04/2015 21:24

Ooh this is interesting - I've just decided to cut out the wine (as well as Pepsi Max!) and would be overjoyed if it also helped me lose half a stone or so. Without fail a couple of glasses then results in me rummaging through the kitchen eating mountains of biscuits and crisps, toast etc. I think it probably also makes me eat more the following day too, and as it disturbs my sleep I'm tired and grumpy and usually feel the need for more 'treats'.

Did you all make it through the weekend without succumbing - Friday evening is always wine night, so that'll be tricky for me...

Howhardcanitbe · 27/04/2015 21:25

PS all of my excess weight is on my belly too - maybe thinking of it as a 'wine belly' will help me keep my resolve?
