Hi,

I am turning some attention to my diet, not because I am overweight yet, just because I want to be healthy; but I have some questions, could anyone help me please?

Is brown pasta and rice ok to eat regularly? I cut out the white stuff but still love these carbs. I have them for dinner a lot.

Are there trans fats in home made food or is it just ready meals?

I hate breakfast - is a crumpet with marmite and an apple ok? Otherwise it's a bunch of pistachios and an apple. Oh an a glass of oj.

And the million dollar question....How do you wean yourself off high sugar and fat foods like chocolate?

Wholegrain pasta is okay, but wholegrain rice is better. You don't get the blood sugar spikes with less processed carbs. I like porridge and oat based foods.

Trans fats come from highly processed foods, so homemade is fine, but learn to read the labels in the supermarkets.

Personally, I avoid all wheat, white rice and pasta.

Cut out sugar by going cold turkey. No more: sweets, cakes, biscuits, chocolate etc. No fizzy drinks and definitely no artificial sweeteners.

Satisfy any sweet cravings with moderate amounts of fruit. I like some nuts and a little dried fruit for a tasty snack which will give your energy and nutrients.

Try to increase your protein and eat plenty of vegetables. If you can't face eating lots of veg or lack the time to prepare then think about getting a juicing machine - we're just in the process of doing this now.

Sweeten your foods with cinnamon and other spices. Use herbs and condiments to add extra taste to your foods. Try to steer clear of MSG though.

Some people cut out dairy, but I've never found that works for me.

Drink lots of water, limit alcohol and no sweet drinks. If you must have a sweet drink have a little high juice or a smoothie.
