Advice on how to start exercising

i am a couple of stone overweight and have a very sedatry job and lifestyle with no exercise involved. I don't have a lot of time or confidence but would like to join a gym in the future. Can anyone suggest some simple ways I can start to increase my exercise levels slowly and that don't take up too much time. How do you fit exercise into your day?

I started training for race for life. Search for couch to 5k plans. Or take up a class? Some people find it helpful to train with a friend but I'm antisocial and like the time on my own!?!?

I walk everywhere and have started doing an exercise dvd in the evenings that takes max 45mins (though you can do less as is broken down into sections).

Am hoping to take up cycling and swimming as I get fitter.

I also increased the amount of more physical housework I did (if it raises a sweat then it counts as exercise!) so cleaning down all the woodwork and windows, even things like vigourous hoovering, scrubbing and floor mopping. And the plus side is my house is sparkling Grin

There is other stuff you can do indoors like running up the stairs as fast as you can then walk back down and run straight up again when you get to the bottom. You can also use the stairs to do step ups.
