A few years ago i lost 4 stone through diet and exercise. Over the last year or so i have put back on 1 stone. I am now trying to shift it again but finding it hard to loose any weight. I am eating cereal at breakfast, soup for lunch and a moderate evening meal and doing 30 mins exercise a day. Where am i going wrong?

You could try cutting the cereal for breakfast (high carb and probably quite high sugar) and having a more protein based one instead - omelette, eggs and bacon; or cold cheese and ham.

Doesn't sound like you're eating enough to me. If you aren't snacking inbetween and are literally just eating what you've listed you're probably coming in at under 1000 calories, apparently this can hinder weight loss. I'd suggest using Food Focus or My Fitness Pal to count calories for a while and see how much you're actually consuming. Bizarrely, you may need to up it!

Thanks for the replies. I did wonder if i wasn't eating enough, but i find it so hard to get the balance between eating too much and too little. I will work out my calories. Do you have to eat above 1000 to loose weight?

Well, when I go under about 1000 on My Fitness Pal it shows a warning that eating too little might stop me losing weight. I've also read that apparently if you eat too little your body goes into 'starvation' mode and clings onto its fat.

yellowparrot · 16/01/2012 12:34

I will definately look at my calories. Thanks for that info.

I only eat around 1000 calories during the week and up to about 1500 at the weekend and still lose about 1 to 1.5 lb a week and have done every week since last Easter. I think you should up your lean protein intake. Cereal and soup probably contain very little and one way to aid weight loss is have some protein with every meal.

LingDiLong · 16/01/2012 12:43

Yeah but Fluffy, 600 extra on the weekend, spread that over the 5 days you only eat 1000 and your daily average IS just over 1200. I reckon the OP must be well under 1000 if she's exercising for 30 minutes too. I eat way more than her and still come in at 1200 (or 1350 if I've gone for a jog).

You might like to reconsider your evening meal in terms of calories.

Portion size is important and if you are aiming for a defecit of 500 cals a day to lose weight, then you could still be eating too much of the wrong thing.

I don't know what you eat for your evening meal but if you are having high cal foods like pastry, fried food, white rice, and pasta etc then you might want to sut those out /down in favour of lean meat or fish and veggies.

Should also add that I do also agree with those who've suggested watching your carbs and upping your protein.

foreverondiet · 17/01/2012 18:37

I agree with the others, try cutting carbs and more protein.

A typical day for me in diet mode:

Breakfast: 2 egg omelette, 100g natural yoghurt with 10g ground seeds.
Mid morning: apple
Lunch: Big salad with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, cottage cheese (200g) and tuna (130g - whole tin)
6pm 1 ryvita and peanut butter (10g)
8pm Dinner - protein - meat / fish (around 125g) and loads and loads of veggies.
