What is Dukan all about?

I have only ever 'heard' of it here in Mumsnet. Would love to know what the basic principles are and what a typical daily menu would look like. Cheers all!

Come and join dukan thread.

Basically dukan is high protein, low carb and low fat. Seems to be very fast weight loss. Initially (around 5 days) only lean protein is allowed. Then vegetables & protein every second day and just protein on the other days. Oatbran is eaten every day to keep digestion moving.

Today:
Breakfast - omelette with 2 eggs and smoked salmon, natural yoghurt with 2 tablespoons oatbran.
Lunch - 250g fat free fromage frais and can tuna, with latte coffee (skimmed milk) for lunch
Dinner - will probably have salmon, chicken, yoghurt.

Can be more adventurous with seasoning... no calorie counting, can have slices of chicken as snacks! Diet drinks eg diet coke are allowed.

Tomorrow:
Breakfast - omelette with mushrooms, yoghurt with oatbran
Lunch - cottage cheese and salad
Dinner - steak and steamed veggies.

Then once you have achieved weight loss gradually introduce healthy carbs eg fruit, wholemeal bread etc back into diet.

Foreverondiet, thank you so much. It sounds similar to South Beach diet. The first 5 days when only lean protein is allowed, what on earth do you eat??

See today above re: what to eat on protein day, I agree its very boring and restrictive. I also make tuna/cottage cheese muffins with the oatbran/eggs/tuna/cottage cheese. There are recipies in the book. Its stricter than south beach... (south beach more sensible I agree). I often "cheat" by having steamed low carb veggies with dinner even on protein day.

Oatbran is insoluble fibre. Sold in either health food shops or in tesco with cereal but it is not porridge oats.

I mix it into natural yoghurt, but in the book he suggests making pancake things with it.

Can I ask, is this diet workable if you do not like yoghurt and cottage cheese? People seem to eat a lot of yoghurt, what could I replace it with?

you don't have to eat cottage cheese or yoghurt, but i do eat quite a lot of it (also fat free fromage frais, which I guess is really yoghurt with a different name). probably workable if you like eating meat and fish a lot...

Foreverondiet, if I may bother you again, how exactly do you make an oat bran pankake and still keep it low fat/low carb? Cheers.

Oat bran is allowed as its soluble fibre (although only limited amount per day), he explains why in the book. Can't remember exact quantities but its egg, fat free natual yoghurt (or fromage frais) and oatbran.
