Coffee as breakfast- Advice please!

Hello!
After overeating for years, I am finally trying to do something about it by eating only when I'm hungry and not eating crap. However, I am confused about breakfast.

I know you need it to start your metabolism, burn more calories etc, but if I have a coffee I don't feel the need for anything else. Does the coffee contribulte to my metabolism burn or not? It's a filter coffee bit a splash of milk.

I know coffee's not brilliant for me, but I am also suffering from huge nicotine cravings, and the caffeine helps that too...

Thanks :)

Apparently coffee can speed up metabolism but coffee is not breakfast, much better to eat low GI breakfast.

To be blunt though, if you don't wake up hungry you are eating too much the day before, so this question is a bit of a red herring.

Hmmmm...
I don't know about that tbh. In the last week I have had coffee for breakfast, small portion of meat and veg for lunch at 12, small dinner about 5ish (usually a small bowl of veg and fish), and nothing but water afterwards. I am hungry when I wake, but coffe fills me up iykwim..?
Thanks for the advice, though. :)

Ok so you are hungry when you wake up but the coffee masks it? Better for metabolism to eat 3 meals & 3 snacks a day.

That doesn't sound like a lot of food to me ! Have you been doing this long (if so your stomach has probably shrunk)
IMO I think you need to have a bit more in the morning (fruit?)

Coffee fills me up as well (but sadly gives me the jitters)

I have been eating like this for about a week. I'm surprised that I'm not really hungry, but I have little faith in myself to keep it up- I have a fucked up relationship with food and am either eating five rounds of buttery white toast or nothing... Confused

Constance please google Paul Mckenna I Can Make You Thin to change yr relationship with food it WORKS!! IMO coffee is not the best breakfast;occasionally yes but not all the time it's not good for yr heart.

Thanks PP- Have tried Paul McKenna, I think I need to face my food issues though!

Did you not find he helped with yr issues? the hypnosis C.D.s certainly helped mine!

Ragwort · 23/03/2011 10:27

I never wake up hungry Blush - perhaps that's why I have needed to diet on and off for nearly 40 years Grin.

Whilst I agree that coffee is not a great breakfast I can understand the 'five rounds of buttery toast' or nothing argument - if it works for you perhaps have coffee early and then a banana mid morning?

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 23/03/2011 11:12

Paul McKenna helped me completely with my food issues :) Could you have a smoothie instead of the coffee?

ConstanceFelicity · 23/03/2011 15:10

I didn't mean to slag Paul McKenna off- It struck me as dealing with the eating but not the reason why.

Perhaps Constance you haven't looked at P.M. in enough depth 'cos one of the most important aspects is to look at yr. emotional relationship to food. (hi Howto!!)

ConstanceFelicity · 23/03/2011 17:18

I shall have another look, thanks for the tip :)

(My children are scoffing mini eggs as I type- That smell...) :o

I'm rarely hungry in a morning and don't eat anything from 6pm onwards the night before. I think some people are just like that.

I'm low carbing but I can't wake up properly without a coffee! I am trying to wean myself off it though, only 2 cups a day now as opposed to 8 Blush

ConstanceFelicity · 23/03/2011 17:32

So are you not supposed to have coffee if you're low carbing? It's doing so well at keeping the fag cravings at bay, but other than that I'm finding low carbing all day and having a normal but healthy evening meal easier than I'd anticipated...

As long as you're eating slowly when hungry it should work Constance When i gave up my ONE cup of ground coffee a day i immediately lost weight (I did have a BAD headache for a day though) Grin
