Appetite supressants/diet aids

I was looking at these in Superdrug this morning. Some of them seem to cost an awful lot

I get the feeling they're a bit of a con/placebo.

Does anyone know if they really work and what the alleged science is behind them?

most of the off the shelf ones have very little scientific evidence to support their use. I work in the NHS and if they really did what they claim to do we would be prescribing them!

The only non-prescribable one with any real evidence is alli. This stops you absorbing some of the fat in your diet. However you need to follow a relatively low fat diet whilst taking it as if you eat lots of fat - and the tablet stops you absorbing it you may have urgent diarrhoea but it does motivate you to avoid fatty things.
