Why the hell does Slimming World work? It defies all logic!

I've done it before on and off, and am going back on it today (after getting slightly bored with WW) but I thought I'd track what I'm eating on WW to see how many points I'd be using whilst doing SW, IYSWIM.

I haven't quite added it up but I know if I'd been doing WW today I'd have gone way over my 21 points.

And yet it works! How, dammit?!

Unless, of course, I end up 10lbs up next week in which case I will not be pleased....

diggingahole · 30/09/2010 14:14

Quite. Does anyone know how it works?!

Joby1970 · 30/09/2010 16:56

SW works by putting you in control of what you eat - & letting you know nothing is off limits. Most people eat the wrong things & too much of them. If you fill up on free food - this tends to be lower calorie & more filling - in the end (over time) you actually reduce your portion sizes without even realizing it - as you get more in tune with your body.

tis magic!

Never query it - just enjoy it!

You've got to eat all your healthy extras too otherwise it won't work. Quite balmy really.

bintofbohemia · 30/09/2010 17:40

Well, am all for it - I just don't get how you can eat more and lose so much! (I think I lost 3lbs in just one day so am not complaining. Either that or my scales are a bit wonky.)

Isn't S.W. based on food combining? because the most fattening way of eating is the traditional 'carb, protein and veg' and it is almost impossible to digest e.g steak and kidney pud. You put on fat to take the toxins.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 03/10/2010 12:16

SW used to a kind of food combining but with Extra Easy you can freely eat carbs and protein with a third of your plate being what they call superfree foods ie. most fruit and veg. The superfree foods fill you up with very low calorie foods, then the rest of the free foods are the foods found to give maximum fullness for the least calories. The healthy extras make sure you have enough calcium and fibre plus thr syns are there to stop you feeling completely deprived and less likely to chuck the whole thing in.

The overall effect is that you feel fuller for longer and although you think you've eaten loads , which you have in terms of volume, you have consumed less calories hence the weight loss.

I did WWs unsuccessfully for years and spent a few weeks when I started SW in July comparing what I'd eaten in terms of WW points. Found some days I went over what would be my points allowance whilst on others I was under but if you looked at the average it came out very roughly the same.

So you could have a steak sandwich and a whole letttuce or pile of green beans?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 03/10/2010 15:52

Yes you can if you use 2 slices of a small 400g wholemeal loaf or 57g any wholemeal bread as the bread is a healthy extra B choice. If you have had cereal for breakfast you would have already used your B choice and the bread would have to be synned on extra easy as you only get one B choice a day.

Alternatively you could have your steak with a jacket spud, new pots, mash or chips oven baked with frylight . They are all free so not an issue, you'd just need to make sure you have a third of the plate with lettuce or beans or whatever you choose for your superfree from the list they have.

ppeatfruit · 03/10/2010 16:49

Blimey I'm not surprised that bintofbohemia wonders how it works!! Thanks Wynken I'll stick to P.M. it's less complicated!

bintofbohemia · 04/10/2010 21:09

I've just tried to get my head around the Extra Easy thing, but to be honest if you're a veggie (like me) I think the green days are best - doesn't do me any favours dropping HE to have stuff off the red free list (IYSWIM)?

I'm going to weigh myself tomorrow. (Am doing it all myself at home, not going to classes.) I don't feel like I've lost weight, and I can't see that I have either, but will reserve judgement til tomorrow. Have eaten so much more this week than in the last few weeks on WW I'll be very interested to see what's happened...

1lb off. Sort of impressed, and yet disappointed. Hmm

bint - 1lb is 4 stone in a year!

bintofbohemia · 06/10/2010 12:44

Joby - I hadn't thought of it like that, I can live with that. Thanks! Grin
