Bad wedding cake samples

Just wondered what you would have expected to happen here (or, if you own a similar business, what you'd have done).

Ordered some cake samples from a local wedding cake baker, cost £40 for 5 samples. All but 1 tasted of freezer burn.

Don’t order a wedding cake from them!

What do you mean by expect to happen? You didn’t like their samples, get your wedding cake from somewhere else.

Flymeaway4 · 11/03/2026 09:08

I guess it’s the fact I’ve had to pay for samples and they were awful. Guess I was just surprised there was no offer of a refund or replacement and wondered if that was normal.

and no, I’ve ordered elsewhere now.

I suppose that’s the point of samples though - to judge quality.
You ate them, thought they were bad quality, so aren’t using that company. You knew there was a risk they’d be bad, because that is part of why you ordered samples - to check if they’re any good.

youve left a bit of story out. the bit between the bad cake and the lack of replacement samples.

did you contact them to let them know that their cake samples were off due to freezer burn?

Did they refused to replace? honestly i’d understand if they didn’t refund you but i’d suggest they try some of their samples themselves and see what you mean. and then refund you for the ones that were bad. I’d leave appropriate feedback if no refund forthcoming. £40 is a lot of money. and i agree that getting the cake elsewhere is a good plan.

Do you want your money back is this what you mean ? You didn't like them move on and look elsewhere,

Yes, I let her know the issue. She just said she was disappointed I didn’t like them, no offer of replacements or refund. It was a while ago now and I just left it, but it irked me a little and has played on my mind, so I just wondered what others thought.

I didn’t pay for any samples. But I’m not sure why’d you’d expect a refund?

timeforanewnametoday · 12/03/2026 07:57

if the problem was freezer burn not personal taste they should have replaced.

LancashireButterPie · 12/03/2026 10:09

£40 for samples? Oh my! What fresh hell is this? I thought samples were free and a good way to drum up business.
I would let the seller know and request a refund.

Do you not expect a refund for a faulty product?

I wasn’t expecting it either, but few places don’t charge now. Many bridal salons charge for wedding dress appointments now too!
