Wedding dress alterations

I bought a wedding dress for £600 and it needs the straps shortening and the length taking up. I’ve had a couple of quotes from wedding dress seamstresses and the cost of alterations is between £400 and £650. I’m sure it takes a lot of work and is very specialist but compared to the cost of the dress this seems a lot. Can I just take it to a standard tailor that you get on the high street? Has anyone tried this, was it cheaper and or successful?

many thanks

I took my wedding dress to a standard tailor in one of those key cutting shops, he did a great job and was a fraction of the cost. If it's a simple job and doesn't need beading realigning etc most people should be able to adjust the dress.
