Engagement Ring Advice Needed — Wedding in 5 Months, What Would You Do?

Hi everyone, I need some honest engagement ring advice!

We’re announcing our wedding on Christmas Day, and we’re getting married in May — so it’s a bit of a whirlwind! (after 20 years together!) I’m planning to lose around 3 stone before the wedding, and I’m stuck on what to do about my engagement ring.

I absolutely want a beautiful ring, but I’m really anxious about sizing. If I get it now, I’m worried it won’t fit once I’ve lost weight. If I wait until I’m closer to the wedding, it feels strange not having a ring when we announce it at Christmas.

Has anyone been through this?
Did you get your engagement ring before losing weight and just resize it?
Or did you wait until nearer the wedding?
Any tips, regrets, or things I should think about?

Thank you — genuinely appreciate any advice!
(It's my 2nd marriage. Ill be 57 at the wedding)

After a long time together we did a wedding/engagement band in one. It's gorgeous, practical and sensible.

Thankyou! Thats a great alternative 👌

Just choose something the jewellers can resize easily - it took them a day (in house workshop) to resize my engagement ring. It wasn't very much either as it was a traditional type band and claw setting

The last thing I want is practical and sensible for my second marriage. I want the full bling and as unpractical as I can

Three stone?

JDM625 · 27/11/2025 19:36

Congrats! I'd get it made now so you can wear it. If you lose the weight, either get it resized, or use one of the clip things to make it smaller. You can get metal ones or clear ones.

You could have a decoy ring for Christmas. Maybe something you'd wear in the future on the other hand? But which doesn't break the bank. For example:

Then get the fancier ring closer to the time. BUT if you have your heart set on a particularly design, consider two things:

Can it be delivered before your wedding, plus time to resize it if there's a problem

Is the design one that can be resized at all - many cannot.

I have lost over 6 stone and my rings are currently held on with resizing glue and prayers 😂😂.

Buy a stunt ring for now. Get a silver and cubic zirconia one. H samuel do them for £30 or so.

start designing your real ring
Swap them over..... watch as almost no one notices....
Live your lives

no to the stunt idea, honestly just size the ring slightly snug.
i have a pinky ring that i have worn since my graduation ceremony in 1978 when i weighted 110 lbs soaking wet. it's still in place and does come off and on (extremely rarely) with my weight being closer to 165+.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 27/11/2025 19:53

How exciting OP!
I agree with the PP and go for a stunt ring - not that I knew they were called that! Just a dress ring for the big engagement reveal and then a lovely wedding/engagement ring in one for the wedding itself.

Belindabelle · 27/11/2025 20:12

I have lost 5 stone and my rings still fit.

TalulahJP · 27/11/2025 21:23

Buy it a wee bit nearer the time when youve lost some weight. My platinum engagement ring cost £45 to resize (split up wanted to wear on another finger)
Took under a week.
So it won’t be hard to get yours done if needs be, although it may not need done at all, depending on the size of your knuckle as if it’s the widest part it won’t really change as it’s bones rather than fat.

FinallyHere · 27/11/2025 21:54

Buy it to fit you now and just check before making your final choice that it can be easily resized. My rings were resized by local jewellers ‘while you wait’, no payment required .

Not sure exactly how long it took but seriously not long.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 27/11/2025 22:39

Actually tbf i got mine snug as was planno g to loose weight. and lost 30kg and they still fit fine..maybe just a touch loose bit wpuldnt fall off.

I’ve never had an engagement ring never wanted one but I have had my wedding ring resized twice by an independent jeweller without any issue. It’s a band with some small stones, they re-size the back of the ring so it looks same at front )if you know what I mean), congrats on your engagement!

JudgeBread · 29/11/2025 08:16

I had this same scenario! Long engagement and I planned to lose significant weight before the wedding - I got a "stand in ring" which was very pretty but only about £50 with the intention of picking both my engagement and wedding band together closer to the day.

I now have the stand in ring on a chain and my dream engagement (and wedding!) ring without having to resize anything.

ThisHazelPombear · 29/11/2025 08:20

There’s only so many sizes up or down the jeweller can size a ring so ask before you end up having the ring remade.

Talipesmum · 29/11/2025 08:23

This engagement ring should fit you for life, not just your wedding, so unless you plan to lose weight and it stay lost for the next 50 years, maybe consider having one you can resize a bit?
