Hello. Please can I ask for help.
I'm a mid 50s bride to be. We haven't set a date or a venue yet but it will probably be in the next few months. It will be a

  1. Register office
  2. Small - Us and likely less than 10 guests
I have no idea what to wear. I'd like to make an effort - its our first marriage. I'm a 5'5 slim apple usually to be found in jeans and a t-shirt. I've had a quick look on line and I feel overwhelmed. Thank you x

Congratulations!

So what do you want to wear?

A full blown bridal gown (with the whole ritual of champagne and tears in a fitting room)?

A once in a lifetime splurge on a chic ‘designer’ dress from somewhere like Net-a-Porter? (Or similar, rented for the occasion.)

Something lovely from the High St that won’t eat into your wedding budget too much?

A Vinted bargain?

What’s your budget? And dress size? And style preference? Would a velvet trouser suit be more your thing?

Think about what you will be doing that day - are you planning on a meal in a restaurant? Any activities? Using public transportation?

I had a full bridal gown but we chose to marry in church (only 30 guests but it mattered to me) I would not have chosen full length for a registry office if I needed to use the bus, instead I saw some lovely 50’s inspired dresses

Thanks @Perfidia I definitely don’t want a full bridal gown. I also don’t want a once in a lifetime splurge.
I don’t think I’d want to spend more than £500. I think I’d prefer a dress and coat ensemble. I’d consider a Vinted bargain or renting. I guess I want to look chic on my wedding day although it will be a small and intimate event 🙏

@mamagogo1Thank you for your reply. I envisage a short registry office with a restaurant meal afterwards. I doubt public transport will be used. I like the idea of 50s inspired dresses 🙏

I wore a blue Hobbs dress (50s style) with a jacket to mine. Similar shape to you.

MiddleAgedDread · 22/10/2025 19:18

One of my friends had a shift dress and balero jacket for their similar age and size of wedding, it was from Monsoon but I can’t see anything similar now.
if you’re getting married over the winter you could do something very classic and a fake fur jacket or shrug www.jjshouse.com/a-line-square-asymmetrical-satin-wedding-dress-002290909-g290909

I think a 50s style with a jacket and nice shoes sounds perfect.

I follow this shop. Some really stylish outfits for ideas, or to book an appointment if you are close enough.

Have a scroll back through and see if there is anything that appeals. https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=joel%20alexander

I've added a photo of one dress and coat that I love.

The outfit I posted is Veni Infantino. Lots on Vinted (though not this current season one).

Whereas if someone forced me to wear such an outfit I would probably cancel my plans for the whole of the rest of my life …

We got married during lockdown so it was just us and two witnesses, we wore jeans and tshirts with bride and groom printed on the back. We did do a proper big party after lockdown where I got to wear my proper wedding dress.
