My DP and I are planning on eloping! Nothing too flashy as it'll just be us two and our 3 children (age 6,2 &1) but we're struggling so much on where to go!

Things we'd like:

  • Abroad but short haul (we are from England)
  • picturesque (maybe a beach so the kids can play)
  • accommodation that has a kitchen
  • less than £8k for flights/accommodation

Has anyone done this and so you have any tips or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

My parents eloped to Nevada — but not Las Vegas — in 1946 and didn’t tell anybody for two years!! Their “secret baby” was born in 1949 lol.
They didn’t tell because my dad wanted to finish university after the war.

I don’t have any suggestions but wanted to say congratulations and wish you all the best.
Much love.

Italy. CinqueTerre and a church in Monterosso or in the hills.

Scotland. Oban... or Crathie Kirk in high heather or way up in Betty Hill.

Ireland. a pretty villiage church that has a choir some where in Donagal.

A Channel Island like Jersey at a villiage church.

Monterosso has beautiful out door dining in the streets and a lovely beach and hiking. Fly to Florence or Pizza and take train. Accom eg. Hotel Palme, Corallie Rooms and Apartments,

Speak to a travel agent about best deals and about the Channel Islandsetc...

You can get married by the Captain on a cruise ship. If you pick out of season, March/April or October/November can be even cheaper. P&O have some great deals at the minute. Incredible adventure and love being at sea. Perfect family holiday as can get the beach part on port days depending on the route and kids clubs are excellent. Ages: 2-4, 5-8, 9-12 and 13-17 so all tailored to their interests at different stages. For under 5’s they also have minding service. Quite sweet really. After ‘kids tea’ - all the usual things they love, they give parents a pager so you can be buzzed if needed. Initial outlay bit more expensive than some holidays but all your food (also excellent) and entertainment included. For such a special occasion, could be worth it and with planning still be in budget. With the amazing kids clubs you might even get a little bit of me time with your new spouse.
Should add you’d need two cabins (4 max.occupancy) but if you ring up they have some with connecting doors and some ships with a 2 bed apartment etc.

Have you thought about a cruise ship. Lots do packages and your holiday / honeymoon can be combined?

No flying if you leave from Southampton. Lots of ships are super family friendly too!

Denmark is supposed to be very low paperwork requirements so a Danish island maybe (or near Legoland?!).

Gibraltar.
I am going to a wedding there later this year.
As it is a British territory (apologies if not totally correct terminology) I believe it is ‘the same’ as getting married in the UK.

Copenhagen could be an option. The city has lots of weddings from abroad and knows the drill.

useitorlose · 07/01/2025 12:04

Gibraltar. Paperwork is really easy, mild climate most of the year, nice and warm in summer. Some really picturesque spots for photos. We married in the botanic gardens and had photos all over the rock, including on the cable car. 3 hours from London, Easyjet also fly from Bristol and there are other regional flights too.

We eloped!

We live nw England but went up to Edinburgh. Was amazing.

If we had gone abroad we would have probably wanted somewhere we could legally marry and not need to do the legal part either before or after. We wanted minimal fuss!

Yes to this, Aero Island is beautiful and have a wedding agency who specialises in elopement weddings! They help with the paperwork too.

I’d go to Cornwal. Less effort and just as nice. Beaches everywhere and plenty for dc to do. Who is looking after them at the ceremony?

We are eloping to Edinburgh to get married two weeks today 🤩. Our venue is the tiny st Margaret’s chapel, part of Edinburgh Castle. Can’t wait, it’s been so hard keeping it a secret!
