I’m marrying again this year after being widowed five years ago. My fiancé has also been widowed. When he married for the first time, he and his wife double-barrelled their names, eg Smith-Jones with Jones being his surname.
When we marry, I would like to take his name (Jones) but not his late wife’s. He plans to stay as Smith-Jones as he has children with that name.
Does anyone know if I can submit our marriage certificate with his name as Smith-Jones in order to change my name on my passport and driving licence to Jones? We live in Scotland.

You can have any name you like. You don't need a wedding certificate. Just choose your name, sign a deed poll and away you go.

It’s a bit different in Scotland, we don’t have deed poll. You can do a statutory declaration but it’s not normally necessary with marriage. Straightforward if the names match, but ours wouldn’t quite!

We had a similar thing with names. Our registrar was really helpful, we asked about it when we went to see her about our ceremony and to organise when to give official notice etc . I'd ask them about it.
