Downton Abbey - Hen Do

Friend is getting married next year (I'm a bridesmaid but not maid of honour). Hen Do is in Liverpool - non negotiable apparently. Going Friday to Monday

The bride is obsessed with Downton Abbey (theme for the wedding) but we are a bit stumped as to what we can do on the hen that fits the theme! We have said we will do 20s fancy dress but that's it at the moment...

Any ideas? Thanks

There a few Titanic things you could do in Liverpool (as Downton opens with the news of the sinking and it's because their cousin was one of the victims that the whole story starts)? Not particularly celebratory obviously but might add the historical angle she wants.

didn't Lady Mary have a dirty weekend in Liverpool with one of the potential 2nd husbands? (not that I'm suggesting you all have a dirty weekend but I'm trying to think of connections to DA)

What is planned for the hen so far? how about some cocktails? a tea dance? charleston lessons?

shiningstar2 · 19/08/2023 11:31

Begin with posh afternoon tea? Complete with 20s outfits which must include hats which for ladies always stay on. Cocktails of the era. If you could find a tea dance, unlikely unless there are themed venues near, that would also make a fun early evening.

I was going to suggest an elegant afternoon tea, but a tea dance would be excellent.

When is the hen do? There are lots of roaring 20s night in Liverpool but usually nearer Christmas.

Otherwise try the Puffin Rooms www.puffinrooms.co.uk

afternoon tea

charleston or other 'roaring twenties' dance class https://www.dancehenparties.co.uk/charleston-hen-party-dance-class/

as pp have said look up DA filming locations and see if the hotel Lady M stayed at (I think with Tony Gillingham?) was actually filmed there and take a photo/have a drink there? I thinks the excuse she gave to her family was she was going on a "sketching holiday" so you could do a class linked to that (nice painting or a nude model type one!)

They also go to watch horseracing at some point if there's anything on?

during the day be the above stairs peeps - go for a lovely afternoon tea and make catty comments to one another and roll your eyes whilst sipping daintily from a porcelain tea cup.

at night be the servants - attend some raucous knees up.

Duckingella · 19/08/2023 14:22

Can you not do a weekend away down south and take her to highclere castle for the day?

DontBeBitterGlitter2023 · 19/08/2023 18:10

Thanks everyone some amazing suggestions! I didn't even think of the dance class and will definitely be looking the company that was linked... may book a few others with them too

We had already decided on afternoon tea but I was hoping to find somewhere with a 20s/art deco vibe - I looked at the titanic hotel but doesn't seem to be like that

@Duckingella she's been to Highclere a million times and got engaged there, for some reason she's decided It has to be Liverpool!

There’s a vintage tea room in Southport, staff are dressed in Victorian costume only a short train ride away.
Not the best website but it’s a lovely place : https://nostalgiasouthport.agencyofboom.com/
