Obtaining a wedding license in Greece

Hi, has anyone been married in Greece?

We are from the UK and are currently putting our legal documentation together, but struggling to find out process for actually obtaining the marriage license in Greece and how long it takes on average. We want to be sure that we will have enough time once we have our documentation together.

We will be getting married on one of the islands, rather than the mainland. We do have a wedding planner and are waiting for more details from them, but in the meantime, we just want to be prepared with any timelines - grateful for any insights anyone has, please!

I think most people end up getting legally married at home and only having a symbolic wedding abroad because it’s very difficult unless one of you is a citizen.

Thanks for replying! We are having a Catholic ceremony and I think civil weddings aren’t valid from a Catholic perspective. I think may end up having to do that though - maybe even after our Catholic ceremony, it’s just all quite confusing!

Might be different but I'm getting married in Cyprus.
We've needed to get some docs signed by solicitors to say we are who we are, a no trace letter from the gov to confirm we have or haven't been married and them needed to send them off back to the gov for an Apostille stamp, all docs last 3 months so it's been very rush rush, and then we need to do something when we get there too.
Our wedding planner gave us a step by step instruction thankfully.

Which island are you getting married on?

We are getting married in Crete and need to get a CONI here, then get it apostiled, send the documents to our planner in Crete, get the CONI and our birth certificate translated and the planner manages the paperwork in the town hall
