WEDDING HELP?!

Hi all.

I am from edinburgh and my fiancé is from Birmingham but we both live in Scotland.

We are getting married in April 2024 in the Lake District.

Now I'm totally confused by the legal stuff required of us before we get married.

Does anyone have any idea what it is we do (in simple terms)?

Some local English council website says that I need to come to England and stay for 8 days before the wedding? Surely not?

Any advice would be fantastic!

Sorry I'm Scottish too so don't have first-hand experience but it looks like you do need to be resident in the registration district for at least seven days before giving notice, not before the wedding. You must give notice at least 29 days before your ceremony.

Sources here and here and Citizen's Advice

Who is marrying you? I'd recommend speaking to them to clarify the process (as in registrar/celebrant/minister etc). I do think it's generally easier to marry in Scotland than England though, hence Gretna Green etc. I hope you get it sorted.

In England you have to give notice at least 28 days beforehand, in the council area you live in (not where you’re getting married). I’d contact the registrar you’ve booked for the wedding and ask them.
