Hey everyone,

Was wondering if anyone has any experience in getting diamonds in dubai? Have heard it's a fair bit cheaper than purchasing in the U.K. however just wanted to get some opinions/experiences

A family member bought some lovely stones out there - but, he was on a six month contract, had local help and was careful about learning the ropes.

I would look at auctions in this country if you are buying for personal reasons. The prices are astonishingly cheap but you have to put the time in and be prepared to move when you see something you like.

I bought a ring from the new gold souk, on Sheikh Zayed Rd shop called Cara in around 2012. Chose the diamond and the setting. Diamond certificate was provided. It was valued for insurance purposes in Uk for more than three times the value by two different valuers once in 2015 and again more recently. You'd expect inflated valuations but this was a surprise.

chesterlestreet · 01/01/2023 21:38

Three times the price

brusselspout · 01/01/2023 21:43

I haven't myself but I know a couple of people who have and they've been very happy. As a PP mentioned, sometimes they're triple what you paid for them. It's often cheaper to pay for a whole holiday + ring in dubai than just getting one in the Uk.
Things to be careful about - when bringing it home obv you have to declare it and then pay tax. If you choose not to do this you're breaking the law, probably won't get caught (unless customs check your luggage and find the box etc) but that means it's not covered on home insurance. Is it worth the risk?

Lisarinnaslipss · 01/01/2023 21:45

Why would you buy a stone from some where buil by modern day slavery?

Glad somebody mentioned that up.."Border" seem to turn a blind eye most days but it's worth being aware of the following:

Agree.

If you do decide to go ahead then follow the guidelines on buying ethically - not sure how easy that will be in somewhere like Dubai though.

justasking111 · 01/01/2023 22:32

DS worked in the oil industry out there. A lot of the lads bought stones and had them set back in the UK

DoodlesMam · 01/01/2023 22:33

Hatton Garden in London is good, and the diamond quarter in Birmingham also good. The air fare to Dubai can be spent in the UK instead....

Do read up on blood diamonds, and how to avoid buying one before you shop

Yes! I just got back from Dubai early December and had a necklace made. My husbands god parents often go to Dubai and make some nice purchases.

We arrived on the Thursday, explained what I wanted & he made it up over the weekend for us to collect Monday before we flew home.

My eternity ring and quite a few other items I have have come from Dubai.

We go to the houseofwindsorjewellers.com and speak to Mehul the owner. It's basically in a shopping centre full of jewellery shops and nothing else. The shop we use isn't the most impressive looking but he can make the items to order which is amazing

sp3418 · 01/01/2023 22:46

Also the exchange rate isn't great at the moment so that will make a difference

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/01/2023 22:58

Don't.

If you want cheap, just get lab diamonds.

justasking111 · 01/01/2023 23:03

I've just priced a lab diamond solitaire ring. Over 3k

Nsky62 · 01/01/2023 23:08

Go to eBay get second hand ring

miniworry · 02/01/2023 01:17

Yes, when I was an expect living there (4 years ago) diamond jewellery out in Dubai used to work out around 40% cheaper to what it would be valued as here in the Uk. The gold and diamond park in Al Barsha is full of diamonds that you can have essentially made to your requirement. However, with the exchange rate as dire as it is at the moment I'm not sure how much difference there is in pricing.

Your best bet would be to price up what you'd like here in the UK, then contact the Dubai store direct over email to get a price then you can compare.

miniworry · 02/01/2023 01:19

I second Cara at the gold and diamond souk on the Sheikh Zayed Rd as the PP mentioned. They're easily contactable via email prior to flying out there.

RunLolaRun102 · 02/01/2023 01:22

Meena Bazar - the jewellry shops are geared for Indian consumers so you will get the best gold/diamond quality for the best price. Designs are limited but still better than anything found in the UK. If you wear it home tax won’t be applicable.

How big was it? Must be massive.

Dente · 02/01/2023 03:15

My Husband bought mine in Gulf. It was bespoke and got it valued here. Around 3x the value of what was paid.

I also know someone who got their stones in Antwerp and had was really happy.

Thank you, how do you find the pricing/quality in comparison? Was this lab or natural?

OP posts:
sp3418 · 02/01/2023 19:03

I'm pretty sure there all natural, if I'm honest my husbands god mother is the expert and I'm heavily guided by her! I doubt she'd ever had a lab one.
She used to work in a jewellers so understands about the clarity/cut etc, (I just picked the one that looked the sparkiest 🤣)

My SIL who got her engagement ring from there was given a diamond certificate which tells you all the details.

We get everything valued when we get home for insurance purposes and it's always been at least x3 the price that we paid. I haven't got my new necklace valued yet but unfortunately I imagine with the rubbish exchange rate it won't be as good.

I think his email address will be on his website if you wanted to ask anything- he's very obliging and explains everything. He'll give you a price before he makes anything up for you. Tell him Sandra sent you!

SirChenjins · 02/01/2023 20:16

How do you ensure they are ethical if they’re not lab diamonds?
