Wedding Cake - Am I crazy to make my own?

Wanted a little guidance from the group mind - I am thinking about making the cake for our big day.

Getting married in 6 weeks and my cake maker has let me down. I have a couple of options, either expensive or a bit underwhelming! I floated the idea to make the cake for our wedding with DP and I got a cautious thumbs up.

I am a pretty good baker, not great with cake decorating. Thinking about a 3 tier naked cake.

Am I crazy to attempt this?

I did - we made 3 large cakes but only used one for display. They were chocolate mud cakes. I covered all 3 in choc ganache the day before, very easy.

For the display cake we ordered flowers to go on top and just plonked them on in the morning.

My friend was on a budget , she got one from M & S and I decorated it with fresh flowers for her.

Is viewing the cake not a general thing? When I got married I went to the bakers the day before my wedding where it was ready for me to look at before they delivered it.

In fact when I arrived the cake maker had stepped out and the shop owner told me it wasn't ready. I nearly had kittens!! He got the photo out and said "she hasn't done this bit, or this, or this..." much to my relief they were all things that I was leaving off and the cake was, in fact, ready!!

You can absolutely do it - if you want to!
I personally wouldn't!- I'd either persuade soneone else to do it or buy plain cakes from M&S- pop a ribbon round it and fresh flowers on top and you're sorted!
Honestly, your guests won't care at all and will most likely not even remember a cake!

I did. Biggish wedding 70+ people. 3 tier naked cake. Made the weekend before, froze, got out the day before and iced, decorated on the morning with fruit and flowers by a relative. It was by far the least stressful thing I did for my DIY wedding...!

I made mine, but it was a rich fruit cake, single tier and I had time for a couple of practice runs. I borrowed a book about cake decorating from the library and practiced on my practice cakes. The final wedding one wasn’t half bad - my icing technique was pretty reliable by then. The top was a bit uneven but hidden by fresh flowers that matched my bouquet. I’m not sure I’d bake a sponge cake so near to the wedding, but I taught myself how to bake and decorate a rich, dark fruitcake, skills I still use now on our Christmas cakes. The posh cake pan I bought is still in regular use 20 years later too.
