Dress Fear

Please talk me down! I've just been to my first dress fitting and left feeling a bit 'meh'. I know this is probably just doubts (I've been married before and had the same thing) but I'm just not sure anymore Sad

I bought it back in September and loved it at the time but now I don't think the style is right for me. It was £1250 in the sale and non-returnable though so it's this one or nothing.

Please tell me about you doubting your dress but then loving it on the day, or tips to make me love it more!

I bought mine in 2019, obviously wedding in 2020 got cancelled and we moved to later this summer. I was so nervous about seeing my dress and wondered if i would still like it. Just been for a fitting and loved it... don't really know how but so much more than when I first bought it !
Why have you changed your mind about the style?
What is it you don't like?
Has anyone seen you in it?
If you've really gone off it could you sell it and put the money towards another dress? How far away is your wedding?

WeddingFavour · 25/04/2022 10:09

I bought a dress in February and am dreading my fitting because I'm not sure I made the right decision. I took the sample so no going back, so I know exactly how you feel. Ultimately, it's just a dress. Everyone will say you look amazing regardless. Is there something you really dislike and is it something a seamstress could alter? Like could they add/remove sleeves, detailing etc?

ImInStealthMode · 25/04/2022 19:06

Thanks Ladies.

It's very 'booby' which hasn't been my style of neckline since my early 20s really. When I bought it (and liked it!) my Mum and 2 friends were there.

I told DH to be I wasn't sure and he's assured me that if it comes to it then I pick another one and we sell it, but I've talked myself down a bit since then by finding lots of pictures of real people wearing it (rather than just the model in the online brochure). The seamstress is also going to make it a bit more modest for me around the cleavage using appliqué they'll have spare when they've shortened it. My next fitting is 19th May; just a couple of weeks before the wedding so keeping everything crossed!

This is the dress, for context.. (two of the pictures that are making me feel better about it!)

And the other one... (can we only do one image at a time now?)

It’s beautiful.

ImInStealthMode · 25/04/2022 19:16

Thank you @YellowAndGreenToBeSeen. It suits our venue perfectly too (very natural, green, outdoors, marquee in the 'wildly landscaped' grounds of a granite Manor House kind of thing)

Wow, that is a stunning dress! I'm sure you will look amazing.

KatieKat88 · 25/04/2022 19:24

That's beautiful! Surely something could be added to make it less booby if you're not comfortable with that now - lace? Obviously by an actual seamstress!

ImInStealthMode · 25/04/2022 19:27

@KatieKat88 Yes, it needs quite a lot of shortening which will leave them with a good amount of the leaves appliquéd on the skirt spare. The seamstress at the dress shop is going to transfer some of them to the sheer part of the cleavage area for me.

DH to be is a big fan of the boobs so I'm sure he'll love it, it just makes me feel a bit exposed (opposite to my younger days when I'd wear the lowest cut tops I could find!).

Beautiful dress but it is very booby. These plunge styles are so popular just now but it's not my taste. I bet once the appliqué is added you'll feel much better about it, I watch a lot of Say Yes to the Dress and it makes a huge difference!

ImInStealthMode · 25/04/2022 19:37

I really hope so, and that I feel better when it's shortened. When I bought it she had me stood on a box, but this time at the fitting I was barefoot on the floor and just lost in it (and I'm not even short!).

The inbuilt cups are being swapped for a better size for me too which hopefully should have a bit of a minimising effect.

The wedding dress shop lady is so so lovely, I've got half a mind to ask if I can pop back to a) try it again before they start altering it and b) see what other samples she still has, if only to put my mind at rest.

It's a beautiful dress and I'm sure like you say the seamstress will work her magic and you will look amazing x

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 25/04/2022 20:29

Did you have your hair and makeup done when you tried it on? Tan if you're getting one?

There was a huge difference for me at seeing me as my normal, every day self dressed up. Felt stupid and uncomfortable being looked at etc.

When I went for a fitting after my hair and makeup trial it looked so different. I suited it much more and felt special in it.

I did keep thinking about it after and hoping I made the right decision. I had in the end but my god the fear!

ImInStealthMode · 25/04/2022 20:34

I had more make up on than I usually would but my hair was an absolute mess as usual Grin

That's a point actually; I'm having a hair trial on the 14th May as we're going to a black tie thing that night. I may see if the dress shop could squeeze me in after that so I can see it when I'm a bit 'done'.

I reckon that'll make a big difference! Smile

Thanks Ladies. You've really all made me feel better. I think I need to be a bit less self-critical about it. Of all the pictures I found this lady has the most similar figure to me, and I think she looks amazing in it : just need to convince myself I'll look the same!

I could have written this after my first fitting. My dress also had a similar style at the front and I had an insert put in to the dress but it wasn't finished at my first fitting.
I felt much better at the second when the work was done, and looking back at pictures it was a beautiful dress I just was too stressed to notice I think.
You'll feel much better once it fits properly and has the work done you want!

theotherfossilsister · 26/04/2022 21:02

That's so beautiful and romantic. You'll look gorgeous.

violetanemone · 09/05/2022 15:04

It's a gorgeous dress and if you have a good seamstress they can do a lot to change things you don't like. If modesty is your main concern then that is very doable. I think you'll be fine :) Congrats
