I'm so happy to be getting married next summer .
We're both a little older and would prefer to keep it smallish .
I've had an idea but would really appreciate your opinions .
I was thinking about having a later in the day wedding and having black tie ?
What do you think ?
Any experience of a black tie wedding please anyone ?
TIA

I’ve been to a few black tie weddings and have absolutely loved them, really lovely excuse to get dressed up

However, MN is weird about weddings and you’ll get lots of comments saying they don’t like the formality / don’t have anything to wear / what about people who have to pay to hire a tux etc.

You know your friends best - if they’re the type to have black tie / the funds to easily hire a tux then go for it, if you feel like no one would easily have anything to wear and you’d be asking a lot from people then maybe reconsider

Lastly - one black tie wedding I went to was in Spain and it was hideous for the men, so carefully think about the time of day it’s being held, if it’s summer then people might overheat!

That sounds lovely. I would much prefer a later start time rather than a longggggggg day stood around. People expect to get dressed up for a wedding too, so shouldn’t have an issue with black tie.

ArcheryAnnie · 21/01/2022 10:04

Later in the day wedding = your guests will love you.

Innocenta · 21/01/2022 10:07

We are civil partnered already but also currently planning a wedding (annoyingly dependent on Covid and so on...), and we are doing black tie! Everyone we've discussed it with is very happy with it. I think black tie weddings are lovely and can even be easier, sometimes, than an all-day one (that's partly why we chose it).

Nopetryagain · 21/01/2022 10:13

This is Mumsnet, if your wedding reception is anything more than hiring a scout hut where everyone brings a pot luck dish you are being indulgent.

I think a black tie wedding sounds great!

PinkMoon22 · 21/01/2022 10:16

Later in the day = perfect already.
I love black tie.
Sounds good to me!

MonkeyPuddle · 21/01/2022 10:21

Later in the day sounds perfect.
I’m not keen on black tie, I don’t mind getting dressed up but black tie for me is a bit much, could work out pricey to buy a dress which I would wear infrequently. If I was invited I would probably grumble to my OH in private and tell myself to shush.
But at the end of the day it is your wedding, you choose what you like!

PhoboPhobia · 21/01/2022 10:22

As long as you're relaxed about people who might not stick strictly to black tie I think it sounds great.

For instance, if someone wears just a normal suit and tie are you going to banish them from your life?!

It sounds like you're pretty easy going though!

drumandthebass · 21/01/2022 10:22

I'd love that.

Rainbowqueeen · 21/01/2022 10:23

Sounds lovely to me.

It wouldn’t work so well if it was earlier in the day

mdh2020 · 21/01/2022 10:45

Ive been to a lot of black tie weddings over the years. These days some men simply wear a dark suit rather than hire a tux and women might wear cocktail instead of long but its a lovely idea and gives everyone the message that they are meant to dress up.

riotlady · 21/01/2022 10:46

Sounds nice! My wedding started at 3 and finished at 11, which felt like plenty of time to see everyone and have fun without standing around aaaaall day

KatherineofGaunt · 21/01/2022 10:52

I went to a black tie wedding. Great excuse to get dressed up!

SlipperTripper · 21/01/2022 12:18

We wanted a black tie NYE wedding - we all moan about having nothing to do on NYE, so we thought aha, let's fix that for one year! (Ended up with February! Lol).

Personally, I'd love it. If it's what you and DP want, go for it! People can always say no 🤷🏻‍♀️

RampantIvy · 21/01/2022 21:29

Sounds lovely. DH would just wear a suit though.

singlenamestar · 21/01/2022 21:59

Yes Mn is weird about weddings

FitAt50 · 21/01/2022 22:08

We had a black tie wedding and it was amazing and we had lots of people say how much they enjoyed it. We had 50 guests at our wedding and the ceremony was at 5pm in Glasgow. My husband and his family are all from London so we hired an open top bus and did a tour of Glasgow for an hour with a private tour guide/comedian. Then back to the hotel for the wedding meal at 7pm. Most of the men came in Tuxedos or kilts and the girls in cocktail/evening dresses.

GalacticGoddess · 21/01/2022 23:02

No experience of black tie but we did 3pm to 12midnight ish and saved money that we could then spend on loads of cake and food. Everyone got a big slab of cake (120 odd people) and lots of food. Loved it. Everyone was merry.

Luzina · 21/01/2022 23:04

Later in the day weddings are definitely the best option. Personally I hate dressing up so my wedding had no dress code. But that’s the point isn’t it - it’s your wedding, your choice.

JacquelineCarlyle · 21/01/2022 23:07

I think it sounds great - I'd love it!

MinglingFlamingo · 22/01/2022 00:31

Sounds perfect!
I love an excuse to get dressed up in a posh frock

Also later in the day people only need to worry about staying over one night at a hotel. Or less issues concerning other commitments
