Black dress to a wedding reception?

LionPen · 20/08/2021 16:52

Need to leave in 1 hour and currently having a dress breakdown!
Everything I planned to wear is too tight (still need to loose lockdown weight!) The only dresses I feel comfortable in is a black one!

Can I wear a black dress to a reception? I have bright colour accessories to brighten it up but just feel like it's a huge no no???

Absolutely fine with brighter accessories, particularly if it's reception only.

Hope you have fun

Depends on the people/crowd really, I know some people who would be highly offended and others who wouldn’t be at all fussed even if they noticed. How well do you know these people?

bluejelly · 20/08/2021 17:10

Totally fine in my opinion

urbanbuddha · 20/08/2021 17:12

It's fine. Bright accessories and it looks like you've made the effort.

Thanks for your reinsurance!
I don't really know the couple too well it's more of a friend of a friend.
I've got red strappy heels and red bag and thinking some statement gold earrings

My best friend was 8 months pregnant when I got married, the only smart outfit that still fit was all black, no way would I have expected her to buy something new! She wore a black dress with a black jacket, all I cared about was her being there - and this was the daytime reception. Wear the black you'll look fine, if they're good people they'll want you there regardless of what you're wearing

ajja2021 · 20/08/2021 17:19

I've wore black to a reception, I think it's totally fine

Miliao · 20/08/2021 17:21

Absolutely fine, it’s much more important to feel comfortable, nobody bats an eyelid as to what people wear unless you are the bride.

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/08/2021 17:23

I wouldn’t. I’d wear a nice slacks and bright blouse before a black dress....

I'd wear a black dress before I'd wear 'slacks'
Shark2020 · 20/08/2021 17:38

I'd say it's absolutely fine. Be comfortable, enjoy your night.

mnahmnah · 20/08/2021 17:39

Of course you can. Unless someone turned up in an obviously bridal dress, I didn’t care!

StickyThighs · 20/08/2021 17:39

@HadEnoughOfBears Ditto!!! 😂

pickingdaisies · 20/08/2021 17:42

I've done this, with bright accessories. It was fine, the bride was happy.
