Buying engagement ring from outside Uk?

Hi All,

I really love Jane Pope jewellery and would love the below for my engagement ring but I'm a bit worried about paying duties and taxes shipping from America to UK. Has anyone had any experience of this? How much did the shipping fees end up being?Or would anyone know where I can get a similar ring, UK based or custom design with the same kind of look. janepopejewelry.com/collections/rings/products/jp-six-point-diamond-ring-1?variant=33418745217161

Thanks so much for all your help!

I bought my first attempt wedding ring online from the US. I think they shipped first to their UK distribution centre and posted out from there so there was no duty to pay.
I ended up returning it as it was so light and flimsy, it looked like a piece of jewellery for a baby not a grown adult. I would say beware of this, check the returns policy carefully. For that sort of money you want to see it in person really. The old fashioned high street jewellers I bought the replacement ring from said they hear of it all the time with online purchases, they’re often hollow gold and no substance to them.
My DH bought his wedding ring online from a US crafts person on Etsy and it had to go back twice for resizing despite measuring really carefully. I think we paid the shipping charges each time and a nominal restocking fee. They didn’t declare the value on the customs form so again there was no duty.

If you find an indie jeweller they could probably design and make something very similar.

I would go to Birmingham jewellery quarter and get them to make one. You'll know exactly what you're getting and it will be cheaper.

I was in New York one time on holiday and my friend had had a ring made in NY and lived in Ireland. I went and "signed for" the ring and then gave it back to the maker who then flew to Ireland with it and there was no tax to pay as it had already been picked up in NY. Risky, but it worked. It cost £22k! I was staggered. They never married and he kept the ring and sold it for a massive loss.
