Eloping to Gretna Green

My DP and I are thinking of eloping to Gretna Green. After looking at local wedding venues and realising the expenses, eloping sounds romantic and perfect for us! I only ever planned on a small wedding anyway! Plus we can still have a small guest count so not "eloping eloping" but it means minimal upset to family's involved.

Has anybody been to a Gretna Green wedding or had a Gretna Green wedding? What's your tips for a great day at low cost?

So first of all...congratulations!

Now, please remember that everyone is different...

DH and I eloped in July 2018...just the 2 of us with witnesses' borrowed' from the civic office. We did look at Gretna and we're on the verge of booking until a work related trip took us to the general vicinity. We popped in for a look...and hated it (sorry!). It was very commercial...with one ceremony after another (granted it was the height of summer). Totally put us off.

We still did as we planned, just in another location-still in Scotland(where we live.

But, as I said everyone is different x

Cheers @Mum4Fergus.

We spoke to my parents last week and surprisingly they think Gretna is a great idea! They have been to a small Gretna wedding before and said it was a really good day! But they warned us not to do it this February because of the weather and short notice for guests. His parents didn't have the same reaction but have said there on board with the idea.

So instead me and me DP are going up ourselves to check out the venues make sure it's what we really want and maybe get married there later in the year. So now it's not at all eloping or shotgun wedding. Hey ho.

Good plan x

Remember if you are intent on Scotland, you can pretty much marry anywhere up here.

Whatever you decide...I wish you the most awesome day when it comes x

Hi,

Me and my husband eloped to Gretna. In February too and had a perfect day. Not one thing I would change.

We married at the Blacksmiths and then went back to Smyths with both sets of parents and our three children.

The ceremony, venue, food, piper were all lovely and we stayed an extra couple of nights afterwards to chill and enjoy the hotel.

Good luck with your decision! I can’t wait to go back. We have been together since we were very young and didn’t want the fuss and expense of a huge day.

As pp has said you can get married anywhere in Scotland.
I’d suggest you look a little further along the A75. from Gretna. Within a 50 mile drive there are some beautiful coastal locations, ruined castles and villages.
