Registry Office wedding high cheese reading alert! Can we use our own words?

Registry office wedding.

Beautiful Georgian building outside, 80s chintz seaside B&B inside Grin

Anyway, the recommended readings are high cheese. Does anyone know if you can write your own reading, or just select a favourite poem or piece of prose rather than use their’s? I know about the no religious wording aspect already.

Thanks Flowers

I think you can choose anything you like (non religious as you said), we’re not having any readings ourselves.

We are getting married this week in a registry office. We were told you can write or choose your own reading as long as it is not religious. Our 7 year old is reading a poem from a children's book we have.

We used our own including a Carol Ann Duffy poem.

I edited any cheese out of the script too.

But some registrars feel the need to insert it back in apparently.

We got married on Saturday, and had one reading, a passage from a favourite novel. Yes to the non religious thing, but we just had to send a copy to them with the other choices paperwork.

I feel your pain. I waded through the usual things and felt nauseated by most. We opted for no reading. But on the day the registrar read The Art of Marriage by Wilfred Arland Peterson and it felt so right. Not sure if you’ve come across that one but it’s more practical than some of the sickeningly sweet ones
