Passports and married name change query

This might sound like a daft question but never having been married before I have no clue! If my fiancé and I change our names upon marriage, will we still be okay to travel on our passports the next day for honeymoon?

The trip will need to be booked in the same names as your passports.

Nononononono33 · 01/09/2018 12:37

Yes as pp said just book travel in the names on your passports. I am married and have not changed my name on my passport even when I renewed it. The booking on the tickets and passport just need to match up.

dementedpixie · 01/09/2018 12:38

The wedding doesn't automatically change your name so as long as the name on the booking matches the passport then travelling is fine. Often people don't change their passport until the next renewal date even after marriage as it is expensive to update it.

Hi got married 4 years ago. My passport is still in my maiden name as it’s not due for renewal for a few more years, I wasn’t loosing out on the extra years just to change the name!

IcanMooCanYou · 01/09/2018 12:48

Saw someone turn up for a flight the other day with a different name than on their passport (just married)- it wasn't going well! They were being told that IF they could change the name on the tickets to get them on the flight, it was going to cost them ÂŁ160, but as we were already boarding they weren't sure they could get it done in time. (Don't know if they ever did get on).

Changing your name after marriage is a HUGE PITA unless you have loads of time to sit down, make lists/ phonecalls/ send off your marriage certificate/ call into your bank/ etc. And even then you'll forget something (car V5!)

But flying is no problem- you just book the flights in the name your passport is in.

Fluffyears · 01/09/2018 17:58

Book the flights in name on passport, legally you can use either name.

C0untDucku1a · 01/09/2018 18:01

You can travel on your passport in your maiden name until it expires. Just make sure the tickets match.

Or, you can keep your own name and name all future babies your surname too.

Charm23 · 01/09/2018 18:07

I got married to DH nearly two years ago and I've still not changed my passport as it's not due to expire for another 4 years!! I've been abroad 6 times since and have had no issues. I just use my maiden name on all holiday/flight bookings.

TittyGolightly · 01/09/2018 18:16

I don’t understand name changing after marriage.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 02/09/2018 15:06

If you want to be able to travel on your honeymoon in your married name, you can get a new passport in your married name which will be post-dated, so it becomes valid on the day of your marriage.

I doubt many people do this as it seems like quite a lot of faff just to be able to use your new name straight away. If you do go for this option, don't book any travel tickets in your married name until your new passport has arrived.

It will be much easier to just book your travel in your maiden name and then change your passport afterwards (especially if you just wait until it expires and then do it).

TittyGolightly · 02/09/2018 15:48

It’s even easier not to toe the patriarchal line and just keep your own name!

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 02/09/2018 16:05

Yes TittyGolightly, but that isn't the question the OP is asking, is it?

And it's not even true for everyone. I would like to keep my name but there are reasons why in my specific circumstances it might be easier to change it.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 02/09/2018 16:07

TittyGolightly good thing you don’t have to. Some people want to.

Fatted · 02/09/2018 16:09

Just book your holiday/flights in whatever name is on your passport.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 02/09/2018 16:13

Also TittyGolightly, since the OP mentioned her fiancé changing his name as well, it sounds rather a lot like they're planning to double barrel or merge their names.

GingerCatBigBalls · 02/09/2018 16:16

Not sure where in the OP it says the fiance is a man..

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 02/09/2018 16:18

I'm assuming the OP knows that a fiancé is a man and a fiancée is a woman. Wink

OrangesandLemons88 · 03/09/2018 18:10

OP here. That's right TittyGoLightly - that's why my male fiancé and I are merging both our surnames into a new double barrelled one. I hope that meets your approval! Wink

Thanks all for the advice. We are going to travel on our old passports and probably continue to use them until they expire.
