We’re wondering about the legalities of double barrelling our name when we get married.

From what I can find online, it would be perfectly fine for me to double barrel my surname with just the marriage certificate but can he? Some websites suggest he can, others say that he has to change his name by deed pole first.

Does anyone know for certain? We’re getting married in October so I suppose we should be doing the deed polemstuff soon if we need to do that first

From what I’ve read on .gov sites, whatever you sign your marriage certificate in is your new name, male or female.

A marriage certificate is considered proof of name change for passports and driving licenses, however some places (banks, utility companies), can’t cope with that and will want to see the non-existent deed poll.

If you google, a lot of websites will tell you a deed poll is required, but almost all of them are sites trying to charge you to do a deed poll through them and are not to be trusted.

DSS changed his surname at his recent wedding and was advised that his marriage certificate is all that is required.
