“You Have Lit the Fire for Life”

Now you have lit a fire and that fire should not go out. The two of you now have a fire that represents love, understanding and a philosophy of life.

It will give you heat, food, warmth and happiness. The new fire represents a new beginning—a new life and a new family.

The fire should keep burning; you should stay together. You have lit the fire for life, until old age separates you.”

We've been to 10 weddings over the past couple of years, so I struggled a bit because I didn't want to have readings that had already been used!

These links have a pretty good selection:

www.youandyourwedding.co.uk/planning/readings-speeches/19-alternative-wedding-readings-for-non-traditional-couples/22267.html

squirrlyplanning.weebly.com/ceremony-readings.html

We've gone for Scaffolding by Seamus Heaney and The Vow by Wendy Cope.

We did things slightly differently. We had two friends doing readings but they picked them and kept them secret (although liaised with our celebrant over content!)

One of them picked the one in @IggyAce's post and the other was as below

Reading 2: From ‘Union’ By Robert Fulghum read by XXX
Dearest YYY and ZZZ
On your wedding day...
You have now known each other from that first glance of acquaintance
to this point of commitment to each other today...
At some point, you decided to get married to each other...
And from THAT moment of "yes"
to THIS moment of yes,
indeed, all along really,
you have been making promises and agreements in an informal way.
All those conversations that were held
Perhaps riding in a car or over a meal
or during long walks —
all those sentences that began with
"When we are married"
and continued with
"I will and you will and we will"-
those late-night talks that included "someday" and "somehow" and "maybe"-
and all those promises that are unspoken matters of the heart between you...
All these common things, and more,
are the REAL process of a wedding.
The symbolic vows that you are about to make to each other today
are a way of saying to one another,
" You know all those promises we have made, and all those hopes and dreams we have talked about?"
well, I meant every word of it."
YYY and ZZZ, please Look at one another now and reflect
Before this moment you have been many things to one another-
acquaintance, friend, companion, lover, Training partner, and even teacher, for you have learned much from one another in these last few years.
In a few moments, you shall say words that take you across a threshold in life,
and things will never quite be the same between you again...

For after these vows, you shall say to the world,
this - is my husband,
this - is my wife
and you will know what that commitment truly means...
